we were pulling in our kayaks.  he was on the docks.  cool kid.  brave.  talked to us.  i spared him the "stranger danger(!)" lecture and told him to cast to the tule line.  he said he didnt have enough line.  my friend Steve jumped into action.  the kid produced a spool of line and we put it on his reel.   he had these tiny shad colored swim baits and we said, "use these!"  he said, "NOPE" i want to try this."  he pulls out a tiny Rapala jerkbait.  i tie it on and did a practice cast.  it looked so cool darting back to me.    we handed the rod to the kid and gave him a high five.

i spent the weekend thinking about tiny jerkbaits.  i googled a few.  i think a tiny jerkbait would kill on some of my local lakes.  especially in the winter!!  and fun on a BFS setup.  now i have a fistfull of MegaBass X-Nanohans on the way.  that darn kid!!!  the tiny monkey is a young, brown hair kid with thick eyeglasses!!  i bet Steve is buying them as well.  he will when he sees mine..mahuuwwahhhaha!

Preaching to the choir, I have boxes of expensive full size jerks... megabass, duos etc, can't seem to buy a bite on them most days. Tie on smaller 2.5 to 3 inch jerks however and the skies open up and fish of all species rain down, I've caught crappie, bluegill, walleye, rockbass, perch, carp, drum, pike, and of course bass (black, brown, and white) on small jerks.

I recently got into small jdm jb's/minnow baits after not having anything in the box to mimic small smelt and threadfin. Saw an x-nanahan video by thehookuptackle guys the other day and really struggled to resist adding a few of those to the collection. I'm curious to hear what you think of them.

You don't want to know. ?

Duo and Daiwa both have some nice options, but since our bait out here is sometimes a little deeper my favorite so far is the Jackall Soul Shad in 45mm (2.7g) or 52mm (4g).

https://www.digitaka.com/items/24/70/35/SOUL+SHAD+45SP (limited stock but secret shirauo works well).

One year on St Clair during our annual trip was a certain color Staycee jerkbait. Others caught some but that single bait was the ticket.

I have a heck of a time keeping anything other than dinks pinned on 65's

What kind of rod setup are you using?

Medium Spinning, 15# braid to leader.  Almost always lose them in first few seconds.

Not sure I can even. Cast this tiny thing!   I tied it on my BFS for starters.

Ha! In all my years, I’ve never seen the bait monkey employ such a tactic. He’s evolving, lol! ? Kudos to both of you for helping the kid out.

I am using a medium with 8lb mono and down have that problem.  Biggest fish I have caught is a 18" SM.

The baitfish silver one has caught more fish than any other jerkbait I have ever used. I have two of these baits that look like someone took a belt sander to.
