Super User FishTank Posted October 2, 2022 Super User Posted October 2, 2022 So I have always been on the side of storing softplastic in their original packages but out convince and lack of room, I needed to move my bladed jigs into their own box. I also found myself always looking for the correct trailer. I have mixed a collection of Zakos, Spunk Shads, some Keitechs, and one color a Rage Menace together. What do you guys think? Good idea or bad? 1 Quote
Super User PhishLI Posted October 2, 2022 Super User Posted October 2, 2022 Storing them in in plastic boxes isn't a problem. Storing them wet with salted trailers installed is though, especially heavily salted types like a Zako. They'll eat the hooks over time. I pull them after each trip then rinse the CB to get the salt off. Mend it patches them up endlessly. ElaZtech is a different story depending on which type, but in general it doesn't seem to be as salty as a Rage Menace or Zako. It can't be repaired with Mend-it, but super glue makes them reusable. Either way, I don't leave anything on a Jackhammer. I've had a Razor Shad start to corrode one after leaving it on too long. No issues with Diesel Minnows though. 2 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted October 2, 2022 Super User Posted October 2, 2022 I store tubes & some trailers in hard boxes. Most everything else is in speed bags. A-Jay 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted October 2, 2022 Super User Posted October 2, 2022 Before selling my boat I stored soft plastics by brand and color; Oxblood, Shad, Purple or Brand/ color & size depending on variations. Some boxes where all Roboworm or Iovino, but nothing over 7”. 7 1/2” to 13” worms I kept in original marked bags, clipped on hangers. Only had 17 labeled Plano 3700 boxes/2,000 soft plastics. Soft plastics trailers in original bags clipped storage hangers. Now only have 4 Plano 3600 size boxes in 1 bag and 2 boxes of terminal tackle in a 2nd bag ready to back seat. Minimal tackle storage. Bulk worm bags stay home to replenish the boxes if needed. Tom PS, don’t use air/water tight storage boxes with soft plastics. Quote
Chris Catignani Posted October 2, 2022 Posted October 2, 2022 I been using the boxes for the last 20 years. Like @PhishLI says about the salt and hooks...no bueno. Quote
Super User TOXIC Posted October 3, 2022 Super User Posted October 3, 2022 I store all of my plastics in Plano boxes but I only have Yamamoto so there is no cross reaction. As has been said, no hooks and I remove the plastics used as trailers from any lures before storage. The only exception is that I store Ned heads and plastics together but I keep the heads in plastic bags. I also spray my terminal tackle with some WD40 and I use chunks of sidewalk chalk as a desiccant. 1 Quote

Good idea. After any bait I have is finished drying after a rinse, I spray the hooks with Blaster silicone lube. Seems to work fine and provides a buffer if I happen to leave salty trailers on jigs and CBs for a few days longer than usual during a trip. Quote
txchaser Posted October 3, 2022 Posted October 3, 2022 I use the Edge boxes to store soft plastics, especially paddletails. I'm a year into the experiment with no problems, and no squid stink either. And I have a 3600 edge where I put chatterbaits with trailers still on. So far the zakos don't seem to have enough salt to cause corrosion or rust on the hooks; keitechs might. Quote

I also spray a little on my SPRO frog legs and the rare occasion I use a jig. Keeps the skirts from sticking together. Quote

KP Duty Posted October 5, 2022 Posted October 5, 2022 I have a thin 3700 (3701) for each type of plastic I use....the 'starting lineup' of each type bait. I want to view all my choices at the same time....not flip through a binder or dig in a duffle bag. Maybe one day we will see a truly worm resistant plano box that doesn't warp. 1 Quote

I do the exact same thing. Got tired of searching for a specific bait. I too like viewing all of my options at once. 3701 Plano thin boxes helped make it happen. Like @WRB said though, excess worms and lures stay at home for restocking. Quote

I used to just leave them in the boxes they were shipped in. I am going to rig up a wall peg system when I redo my garage but that is a ways off. 1 Quote
Super User scaleface Posted October 5, 2022 Super User Posted October 5, 2022 I stuff the pockets of my gear bag with soft plastics . They dont hold a lot so when fishing from a small craft I just take the basics '. When I trailer my boat I have a couple of small gear bags to haul more than I need but I have a big boat , so no problem. Quote

Having a dozen selections of the same type bait isn't necessary. Quote
