I have a bigger dog.  very smart.  (half border collie, half Staffordshire terrier) he is smart enough to know NOTHING good happens at the Vet-office.  I muzzled him, put on a secure harness and off we went.  my wife went in to do the paperwork, while I tried to keep my dog from jumping back into my truck.

it was almost cartoon like - us dragging him into the building.  he was digging for the door the whole time, whimpering like a baby.  the vet took one look and said, "wow, he is freaking out, so I am gonna give him an injection sedative".

as the vet took him back, I shut the sliding door in my dog's face.  the circle of trust is now in question.  :)

man.  I am so stressed out for him.  he is my bud!!!  I am working from home today, ready to race over to gather him up.  hope he doesn't poop in my shoes when he gets home.  DOGS!  seriously, DOGS!!  I didn't even WANT this dog.  my wife just showed up with him and did the Jedi mind trick on me.  smartest dog I have ever had.  everything we train him to do, he has gotten it fairly quickly.

You'll still be his human, I have a Bengal cat that is the same way, and uber smart.    He knows when any other family member trying to round him up for a vet visit, and I'm the only one he trusts to do it.

Every time it makes me feel terrible, like I betrayed his trust.    Yet every time he's just thrilled to be back in his secure place, and doesn't seem to be mad.

We're just doing what's best for them anyways.

My 12, almost 13 year old dog gets her teeth cleaned once a year, and I always feel terrible having to fake like I’m going into the back with her only to close the door on her. ? She always forgives me though.

But now that she’s the age that she is, I’m always a nervous wreck when she goes under general anesthesia to have it done.

There's a real good chance your dog is reacting to your emotions.

Every canine we've ever had was a reactor to the situation not an initiator.

Try chilling yourself out a little and you may be surprised what happens.

Also good on you for looking out for your dogs health.

I was totally chill until I got back into my car.    well, until I saw the estimate of the costs...there went my MegaBass fund.  hahahha...just kidding.  I'll be in Texas this holiday.  I should have used my brothers Vet. way less expensive.  oh well.  Dobyns Fury it is....:D. (Still kidding nervously)

A-Jay.  yea.  Hank's teeth are in pretty good shape.  I like for him to keep them.  hence the visit.  such a bummer to hear a tooth or two had to go.

While our 'pack' is as small as it's ever been (3) Vet bill have been a way of life for us for a while.

Our vet is actually Out-Standing, and we are lucky that she's close.

Either way, I asked them to Never tell me the total cost.

It's not like I'm not going to pay it.

I just hand them the designated "Vet" credit card and that's it.

When we have a full kennel and we're fostering, the local animal shelter handles the foster care needs,

and we can focus on training & re-homing.

Hope your pup is OK.

That's what turns me into a nervous wreck......dang internet has allowed me to read so many horror stories.    I can't even imagine going to pick up my buddy, and getting that news ?

There is a joke about aliens observing human activity, and they observe how often humans pick up dog and cat poop, so then obviously they come to the conclusion that dogs and cats are the rulers, and humans are their servants ?

I think Jerry Seinfeld had a joke about New Yorkers taking dog out, and then carrying the poop back inside for disposal.  the dog is thinking, "heck I could have saved you the trouble..."

My dog loves going to the vet.  Heck, she's excited to go anywhere with me in the truck.  She's never had a bad experience there, so I'm sure that's why.  I pay 35 bucks/month for a Wellness Plan with Banfield/Petsmart which includes all vaccines when needed, plus twice a year visit for complete wellness (blood work, diagnostics, etc).  All I have to pay extra is for the medication.  I save hundreds of dollars a year doing this because they show me the bill every time if I didn't have it, and it would easily be three times as much.  Additionally, with the Wellness Plan, they will spay or neuter the dog for free in the first year.  They also use a laser-guided procedure so the risk of infection goes way down.

My dog is on the wellness plan as well. Kind of like pet health insurance. I pay like $45 monthly for the plan that includes 1 teeth cleaning every 12 months. That alone would be several hundred, not including all the vaccinations that are not cheap.

When they're a puppy, its especially worth it solely based on all the vaccinations they need.

And let's just be honest.  Even if our dogs weren't on a wellness plan, we'd do it for them anyways because they're a member of the family just like our biped counterparts are.

Our dog with nasty teeth has seizures under anasthesia so she just has to have nasty teeth haha. Poor ole gal, she still eats at record speed. The vet said the back teeth are the most important for house dogs life just crunching dog food

the other two dogs somehow have immaculate teeth, they didn’t get that trait from me haha

Get called. Hank is resting.  No issues no teeth lost.

Excellent news.

I bet I can guess the answer to this, but how food-motivated is Hank? Do you reinforce training with treats and all that good stuff?

He likes food.  But it’s toys.  Toys are his jam.  He will search it out like drug dog. Pretty fun.

Right on.  I dunno what work you've done just yet on the issue, so feel absolutely free to tell me to butt out.

Y'all can fix this if you make vet visits fun.

Like trace when during the trip - he FIRST starts acting like he's not cool with what's going on.

That's your first training point. Redirect, reward with toy party, all that.

Once he's got that down, continue the process involved in a trip to the vet for Hank, training out the next uncomfortable point that Hank identifies for you.

The eventual goal is for him to have a toy party with the scary vet monsters.

They'll schedule this for you, too. Probably do it free when you explain what you're doing.
