So I was out fishing on a beautiful Early Autumn day. It was a bit windy, somewhat cool but a great day to be out. As I was making my way around the pond, having caught one already I decided to try a new spot at the same pond. It looked favorable. So I put a few casts in, felt like I got some attention and decided to stay. As I was putting down my gear I felt a bite. I thought maybe a black fly. Continued to fish and then another bite and another sting and yet another. Oh no! I must have put my gear on a hornets or a wasps or a bees or something's nest. They were all over me. I felt like a human pin cushion. I left my gear and ran for my life. At least as fast as an old man can move. I say ran but it was more like a brisk walk. When all was said and done I must have had 20 to 30 stings over my body. In reflection it was a nice day but it wasn't worth it! Have you ever had  an experience like that? In retrospect, it sounds a little funny but some of the dangers of fishing can be quite serious. Caution is always a good rule to live by!

In all seriousness you’re lucky you’re not allergic to bee stings, otherwise this story might have a very different ending.

I had   ground hornets work me over good twice . Once while mowing grass and the other when  I uncovered their lair by moving a landscape timber .

Personally, I’ve never had them come after me but had them swarm around my head.  My 87 year old mother in law got 30+ stings and ended up in the hospital this summer.  Between me and my neighbors house we had a huge paper wasp nest on a utility pole and they never bothered me but they stung my neighbor every time he mowed so he had the utility company come out and remove the hive.

This happened to me at my last house several years ago too.  I was mowing the lawn in September and I had what felt like a pebble hit me in the ankle near the corner of the yard.  I didn't really think anything of it at time and thought maybe the mower had spit something out at me.  I kept on mowing.  It started to really itch later too.

A week later, I'm mowing the same area and the exact same incident occurs.  Well this time I saw what actually happened.  It was a yellow jacket that had come out of a ground nest and stung me in the same area of my leg.  I shut off the mower and realized that one had stung my dog in the face too, right above one of her eyes.  The area above her eye had swollen.  She had sprinted to the back yard after she got stung and normally she is relatively close to me when I'm working in the yard.

I took care of that hornets nest when it got dark.  I poured some gasoline down that hole, lit a small stick on fire, shoved it down there, and burned those scoundrels out.  Then I shoved a small rock over the hole so they suffocated.  That took care of them.  I never saw them again living at that property lol.

Drifted by this nest on the river Sunday. Didn't notice it until I was on it. Gratefully they were not aggressive. First Paper hornet nest I've ever seen outside of a museum. Notice the entrance hole at the bottom. This was a very busy nest. These hornets had white heads. Took this picture and reached for the trolling motor throttle! Didn't drift this stretch again. The worst ones in my area are the orange paper wasps. Big, mean, and ugly! And the sting lives with you for days!

That reminds me of a joke.....Turtle calls the cops......says he got beat up by a bunch of snails! Cop asked him exactly what happened and the turtle replies, "Gee I don't remember. It Happened so fast!"

I run pretty slow too. Except when there's wasps involved!

Had a hornet tag me on the right shoulder while fishing in the black of night. It must of been as big as a Fruit Bat because my whole arm went numb for half an hour. Pretty sure it hit a nerve and the bone with it's stinger.?

I had a big dumb idiot water moccasin chase a swimbait out of a pond and onto my foot, striking my boot. We both ran. Lesson learned, stand back a few feet. Thank you boot, very cool!

And they are deceptively fast. They can move with you stride for stride.

Yellow jackets usually have more than one entrance to the hive within a few feet. Watch your six when dealing with them. You did the right thing blocking the hole - they can come back next year and nest in the same place, but you want to find the other entrance before you deal with them so you can seal it too.

I've gotten stung by them cutting grass a few different times, and I've gotten stung by them fishing at least two different times when standing on their hive without knowing it. I've seen lots of wasps nests along the bank, but I've been more fortunate with them. Yellow Jackets feel like someone put a lit cigarette against my skin when I get stung.

I'll keep that in mind if I encounter them again.  I moved in May so hopefully that problem doesn't follow me lol

I stepped on a ground hornet nest when I was night fishing once and got lit up. Had no idea where I was running but I was getting there fast.

Several years ago my neighbor had a small wasp nest at the edge of his house on the soffit, after getting stung a few times he asked me for help. We devised a plan for him to get in the very back of his 4-runner with the hatch window rolled down.

I was going to back it up to his house and he was going to spray them with a can in each hand. We agreed that when he said go I hammered on the gas to get us away. I backed up, he sprayed and screamed go,go,go I purposely waited a bit Lol. We were always messing with each other and talking smack, he cussed me for weeks after that one.

One of my cousins is very allergic to bee stings.  If it had been him, I doubt he would have made it back to the car after being stung that many times.  Glad you didn't suffer any more than you did.

Those things are nearly on every house here. I’ve actually got a call tomorrow for them…

I’ve been stung by Wasps, yellow jackets , hornets, deer flies , stinging black flies, yellow flies, fire ants, bit by a snake, bit by dogs, bit by turtles , bit by a spider, ticks, and   ALMOST got stung by a scorpion… so yes , I’ve had some experience with that…?

I imagine that "first time" is a doozy.  you won't even KNOW you're allergic.  just going thru life happy and ignorant to the fact that a sting can end you.  so scary.

I have yet to be stung by a wasp or bee.  like I said, I am FAST!!  hahah. I would have swam across that lake underwater like Aquaman!!
