i'm on the other side of the country and i do realize the news tends to blow up situations for affect.  so i wont pretend to know what is going on.

I have family in the Tampa area, and they are hard headed, and will not evacuate.

I am scheduled to move to Savannah on Thursday of this week driving from Indiana. I may be delayed on the move pending how the storm tracks.

Hopefully it loses momentum and downgrades so it wont be so bad.

I went searching for a hurricane out of Mexico beach, FLA with a boat captain named psycho Dave when I was like 9 years old. Somehow I didn’t puke and we caught tons of bonito

We’re pretty much ready.
Got everything outside put away and secured as best as I can.
Mrs Mike has tried for 2 days to find water and some canned goods but nothing left.
She went to 3 stores 10 miles away early this morning to try to find some things but they were almost out also.
Im sure there’s stuff on the way.

In 2004 Cat 4 Hurricane Charlie went through our area and it was bad. We didn’t have power for 9 days.
Hopefully we won’t be in the eye this time

Thanks for checking!

Fellow Floridians…

You guys stay safe out there!!

best wishes Mike.

question.  there is no shortage of water in a hurricane right?  i prep (kinda) for earthquakes.  i have a water purifyer.  it is a hand pump filter.  i have a hand pump water filter as well.  but the Purifyer is next level.  way bigger and not really suited for backpacking and such.  i keep it for earthquakes.  just in case.

would something like that work for hurricanes?  you could hand pump out of anything with water.

i cant imagine the mad dash for bottle water in your area.  must be wild.

My wife and I have lived in Florida all our lives and have been through many hurricanes.  The biggest danger is from storm surge and flooding.  We live in the center of the State 100 miles from both coasts.   Our house is 60 feet above sea level, so that's not a problem for us.  Falling trees are our biggest safety concern.  We can have small tornadoes as well. The most inconvenient problem is power outages.  You don't want to be here this time of year without air conditioning.   Water can be a problem if you don't have City water.  We are leaving in the morning to stay with our son in South Florida for a few days.  Everything is tied down.  All you can do is hope for the best.

I have huge Florida Oak trees around my house (they call them Heritage trees).
It took me a week to clean up after the last one, but that just passed close by.

I’ve been though many hurricanes in the 43 yrs I’ve been here but other than Charlie I never took a direct hit.
Im more worried about my daughter as she lives on the banks of the Peace River.

Storm surge and flooding is a real problem  especially for folks closer to the coast.

Last year folks in Louisiana really took a hit many times as @Catt will agree.

@Captain Phil keep an eye on evacuations as you come south.
It’s gonna get worse as you travel south.

Its staring to cloud up now

Be Safe

The amount of water isn’t too big of a concern, it’s if the treatment plants go down.
Folks with a natural well will be much better off as long as they have a generator

The City of Eustis water system is pretty good.  We haven't lost the water since we moved here in 1997.  Growing up in Miami, we lost power at our house once for two weeks.  My parents had a well and no generator.  When you have no water, you flush the toilets with a bucket.  I had to take a shower at my girl friend's house.  I was working for a grocery store at the time and was paid time overtime to sleep at the store in case there were problems.  My boss had a XKE Jaguar parked in the back of the store and I slept in the seat.  Pretty good gig.  ☺️

I went through a ton of hurricanes of the years when I lived in SE GA.

Fill those bathtubs up with water.  The longest I was without water and power was 10 days, and that is after I cam back from evacuating.  It was not too bad for most of them, I think the last one I went through that was bigger was hurricane Matthew in 2016.

The neighborhood came together great and we all started BBQs every night with food that was going to go bad since we did not have power.

Yall stay safe!

Tampa resident here.  We live in the city, but in Seminole Heights (and not on the river) so we will never face an evacuation for storm surge.  Wind forecasts are still around 60mph at its peak.  We have not decided on window shutters yet (I pre-built them, but waiting to see what our neighbors do, opinions are welcome).  If we evacuate we have family in Sarasota that, while not in a safer position, they have a safer house.  At the same time our house is almost 100 years old, so its been through some stuff.

Boat is stuck in the marina in Tierra Verde, but it's a high and dry, so hopefully it will be safe.  If not, it's not the end of the world.  Their forecast has been worse all weekend, but they shut down early for storm prep and I was not going to bother them.  My little 20' boat was probably the least of their problems.

Stay safe and make good decisions down there. I think the wind will be bad, but the surge and flooding from it and the rain will cause the most damage. Hoping for the best outcome. One of my nieces is down at Disney doing an internship, and her mom is a mess already. The Tampa area has seen explosive growth in the last couple of decades, hope the planning and infrastructure is up to it.

Brother and sister in law just flew back to St Augustine/Cresent Beach home from their daughters wedding in Portland and hopefully it weakens before it gets to them.  We are expecting some heavy rains here in Virginia this weekend depending on the path.

I’ve been outside getting everything put up or pulled under. We’re supposed to get some ocean and river surge up here.

My biggest concern is that our creek/ditch coming out of our lake will be able to process all the rain as the lake gets high and spills out into it. It got way up with Matthew but we are up probably 7 feet at least above the lake including the crawl space. In Matthew it made it almost level with the top of our “hill” but still had 25 feet or so to get to the house. Hoping it will at least wash the dadgum otter out that’s eating our fish !! Wish ful thinking I know…

Another concern is always the spin off tornadoes. We had one last year that missed us by app. 1/4 mile.

And hopefully the ongoing saga of my roof leaking won’t be too much of a problem. Hopefully the tarps dont blow away …

Ive had a lot of near misses in my lifetime here but only one direct hit which was Dora in ‘64. I was 4 years old and remember the howling 90+ winds, and blinding rain. It tore jax and st augustine up!

Well, praying for everyone, esp. further south. Give us updates as the storm passes y’all!!

We’re as good as we can be.
Being born and raised in south Florida like Phil, we’ve seen our share.
as they say “ This ain’t our first rodeo “ lol

Biggest thing is being right off the St. John’s river, the river is high right now, but we are a good distance away from it.
Ground is pretty saturated so a good possibility that with all the rain and wind, some tree will come down. That usually is what takes out the power.

And great offer Woody.

They just issued a mandatory evacuation order for my area a little while ago.
The storm surge is expected to be over 12ft.

Wont be much sleeping around here tonight

We were scheduled to be vacationing on Sanibel Island this week.   We had to cancel our plans.  It’s one of our favorite places to vacation and could be hit hard.

I hope all of you in the storm’s path stay safe.
