akmac Posted September 22, 2022 Posted September 22, 2022 Like the title says at times my Tatula Type R will cut the line in the middle of a cast. I have looked it over several times and cannot find any defects, so I don't have a clue what is causing it. I have my break set so the spool doesn't slop back and forth and have tried new/different lines. Anyone else have this issue and figured out what is causing it? Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted September 22, 2022 Super User Posted September 22, 2022 I have no idea what would be causing that but I would get a q-tip and run it all over the t-wing and the guides on your rod. If the cotton catches anywhere you know you have a nick or crack that could be causing your line to break. 2 Quote
newapti5 Posted September 22, 2022 Posted September 22, 2022 So the line would break right at the reel in the middle of cast? I wonder if it's because of the reel or backlash? If a bad backlash happens in the middle of a hard cast, the brute force could break 12lb line sometimes. Also, when that happens, the spool is still rolling, or thumb bar is popped up and the spool has stopped? The latter could cause line breakage, too. Quote

Super User WRB Posted September 22, 2022 Super User Posted September 22, 2022 The early models of the R100’s had an issue with braid cutting The T wind narrow level wind. That was corrected with reels recalled. Tom Quote
akmac Posted September 23, 2022 Author Posted September 23, 2022 Thanks for all the replies. I am using Yozuri Hybrid, not braid. It's not from a backlash, it just cuts the line. It doesn't snap or catch, just clean cut. I can't find a groove or burr anywhere on the t-wing or spool. I am stumped. 1 Quote
Phelptwan Posted September 23, 2022 Posted September 23, 2022 I thought I had a similar issue recently but it ended up being the hook keeper on the rod was catching line as it was coming out. 2 Quote
Super User WRB Posted September 23, 2022 Super User Posted September 23, 2022 Cracked guides are the major cause. Hook barbs also cut line when lure hooks are attached to guides or hook hanger near the line from travel vibrations. Tom 17 hours ago, Woody B said: Braid only, or other lines too? GetFishorDieTryin Posted September 23, 2022 Posted September 23, 2022 A cracked guide will cut line like a razor, check youre guides with cotton. Line can also be damaged from previous backlashes if it knots tight enough. Other then that I dont know. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted September 23, 2022 Posted September 23, 2022 I’d suspect a rod guide of the line itself before the reel 1 Quote

This is it. You get a small loop or kink that rubs and gives way from friction. Used to happen to me every now and again with my old mg50 shimanos. I'd get a little 'fluff' going on while bombing spinnerbaits and miss a loop. You usually hear the loop making contact right before your lure sails out never to return 1 Quote
The Baron Posted September 24, 2022 Posted September 24, 2022 I had that happen this year with a Shimano Curado DC - had a sudden tug on a cast and my line broke about 20ft from the lure (had a slow sinking jerkbait on and was very lucky to paddle over quickly and get everything back). It was a total mystery to me, until a month or so later my line somehow got down between the thumb bar and the reel frame and I couldn't slide it out so had to actually cut my line. My thought is maybe the line also went in there in that cast and broke/was cut by the force or the cast. Just my best guess. My line was 10# Sufix Advance. EDIT: Read your follow up post and if yours is getting cut repeatedly, it's likely not a fluke problem like I think mine was. I'd very carefully inspect your rod guides, or even switch rods and see if it happens again - narrow the problem down perhaps. Quote

Chris Catignani Posted September 24, 2022 Posted September 24, 2022 Do this....make some short pitching casts. Does it cut? Then longer, longer and longer. I have seen where (usually) the tip will have a chip or crack and it will fray the line...and the line just eventually breaks. I have also seen where the line can loop around a guide and break. I have also seen where there was a loose tip...the tip would spin on the blank and break...and the tip never would come off. Quote
