Shadcranker Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 I've used them fairly often this year when structure fishing in 6-25 ft (dragging off ledges). My favorites so far are: 1. Jewel Mike McLelland model in 5/8 and 3/4 oz. (the newer model with the brush guard and cross-eyed tie). Their skirts are really excellent quality. 2. Jim Moynagh's All Terrain Football Jig (1/2 and 3/4 oz). They have a rubber coated textured head which is different. 3. Omega Football Jig (same sizes- they do have a few round rubber models). All three of the above models have great hooks, skirts, colors, baitkeeper barb, and crosseyed line ties. The Omegas have a Gamakatsu hook, and the other two have Mustad Ultra Points. The other two brands I have are PJ's and Revenge, which are both good. I just relly like the top 3 best. As far as trailers go, I have experimented with everything from twin tail grubs, Paca craws, sweet beavers, Zoom super hogs, and Zoom Speed craws. I Usually use the speed craw or the twin tail, but it doesn;t really seem to matter. One real key here, and believe me I learned the hard way by losing three quality keepers in a tournament- use a heavy action jig rod (7' H action). You can't set the hook well enough on a standard MH action worm rod. Quote
SPAZ Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 I've been using the Pepper Jigs football jigs and I love them. They are a bit smaller profile than regular football jigs but that's why I think they work so great. I use the ultimate versions. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted August 15, 2007 Super User Posted August 15, 2007 I like Tru Tungsten Ike Spikes and Weed Wacker the best but they are pricey. My other alternative is Gander Mountains ball head jigs with Gami. hooks (not the value ones, they're terrible). Quote
L-Train Posted August 16, 2007 Posted August 16, 2007 I absolutely love football jigs. Nothing feels more comfortable in my hand. Jewel Jigs are my favorites. I also have done very good with Chompers Jigs. Well two chompers jigs. I throw a 1/4 oz and a 3/8 oz Chomper FB Jig with a zoom Ultra vibe chunk. The smaller jig with that trailer falls slower than other combinations I have tried. Quote
Super User David P Posted August 16, 2007 Super User Posted August 16, 2007 Pj lures has a great football headed jig, with a great hook, and comes in tons of colors. I also like Skinny Bear jigs as well. Fav Trailer: Uncle Josh's Phantom Craw. (Pork) As for rods, I love a MH rod with a stiff fast tip. Never had a problem with the medium heavy. I now use a 6'10 MH which I got with the soul reason of fishing jigs. Quote
MN Basser Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 I only have one brand, Terminator 1/2oz football jigs. I really like the real and action of football jigs. I use a Berkley Powercraw black/blue to match the skirt. I throw it in the 5' to 15' depths so far. I'm using a 6'6" MH Baitcaster. Quote
bassnleo Posted August 17, 2007 Posted August 17, 2007 Favorite football is a 3/4 oz PJ's coupled with a Micro Munch hydrosilk skirt and zoom ultra vibe speed craw trailer. That combo along with a Micro Munch grass jig won we a tournament last weekend, plus lunker of 5.58 lbs. Quote

flyphisher # Posted August 18, 2007 Posted August 18, 2007 I have fished football jigs exclusively the last 4 months, other than when i was throwing a buzzbait or shakeyhead..... I used 1/2oz in water 10ft or less. 5/8 and 3/4oz depending on conditions and what i am doing... Have used the XPS, Chompers, and jewel jigs.... I like all of them. The skirts on the xps and jewels are much better though, I am also more partial to the line tie on the Jewels, I just like a bulkier skirt sometimes, seeing that i am fishing stained water. I use the same color as the other jigs i fish here. Havent had to pick up a C-rig yet. I like zoom fat albert twin tail trailers.... Paca craw jr's or baby brushhogs on the bigger jigs. They work really good around stumps and stuff for me... fish them on 17lb vanish, 6'10 Team allstar flippin stick, and a 7:1 reel....since going to this setup I have missed very few bites, nor had one jump and throw the hook, like i had happen with P-line CX...
