So , between the more common walking baits - what is your choice for easiest walking bait : A Heddon Spook or a KVD Sexy Dawg ? Also do you find the three-hook hanger larger versions easier to walk than the two-hook hanger smaller versions ?

50 cent piece vs two quarters.  The dawg has more spit out of the box as it sits more tail down (you can change a spook's rear hook so it does the same).  If you're trying to learn how to walk a bait then either one will tell you what you're doing.  This is one instance where using a snap will help you.  It gives the bait a full range of motion if you're not letting off the pressure with the right timing.

I don't fish the 3-hook versions.

I can’t tell a difference. Same with the vixen. Vixen sounds better though.

I should have thrown the Berkley J-Walker and YoZuri 3DB series Pencil walking baits into the comparison as they are becoming more popular and easier to find locally .

I agree with everything but the snap. I think a snap cuts down a little on the responsiveness. The line being tied tight to the line tie is going to give you more action. I get your logic - it's true  that it allows the bait to swing more freely once you have it walking, but I think you have a little less control over the bait.

? You can get spooks and dawgs at walmart. I've never tried the YoZuri, but I know Academy carries it and I'd like to try one. I've never heard of the J-Walker.

The sexy dawg is easier to walk, but the spook has more drawing power for me.  I use the three hook for a slow, wide walk, when I want less forward movement and for walking around a stump or stick-up and the two hook when I’m looking to speed things up.

The Yozuri Pencils are the easiest for me.  The 6th Sense Catwalk was insanely easy too.

Rapala Skitter Walk walks really easy. Haven't been using it much this season since I use spinning gear most of the time. Such baits work better with BC (for me). I do occasionally use a Zara Puppy but find that it requires a bit more effort because of its smaller size.

I have used spooks, skitters and lucky craft sammys.

to me, sammys are so easy to work and the skitter walk not too far behind.

the spook is definitely doable and manageable.

if the Sammy is a 10, the skitter is a 9 and the spook is a 7 in ease of working to me.

however, if you use a duo lock snap or loop knot instead of direct tie, I have found that the spook’s ease to work it brings it up to par with the other two.

Also, larger spook seemed easier than the spook jr.

I've only used a Spook for what I consider a "walking bait".  I can't cast a spook in a manner that doesn't sound like a concrete block falling into the water when it lands.   My top water go to is a Devils Horse.   I "can" walk it, but that's not the way I normally use it.  I can make a Devils Horse land like a feather.

Can y'all make a spook land softly or is the splash not an issue?

Walking baits are usually bombed casted past the target, so the grenade splash isn't usually an issue. When throwing into the target area itself, an underhand pitch like cast where the lure does not get much altitude, and a feathering of the spool just before impact will quiet it down on impact.

I learned this years ago while reading an article by Bernie Schultz titled Charlie Campbell Walks the Dog.

Thank you for your post and reminder. I forgot how about the technique and had to look it up again.

Sorry OP, didn't mean to go off topic. But, seriously, I like them both.
