Daiwa Zillion SV TW G vs the Daiwa Steez SV TW? IS the Steez really that much better?

Posted

I like my Zillion.  How much lighter is the Steez?

I suspect my rods are heavy when compared to higher end ones.  I don't know if a lighter reels would matter.  (my most expensive rod is less than 2 bills)

1.2oz

I would imagine the Steez is more refined in some other areas as well.

Zillion G is smoother due to the gearing. Steez is ergonomically more comfortable and the spool, imo, is a lot better as well. Steez has bearings in the levelwind if that's your thing. Steez also uses paper shims in areas like the twing internal engagement, where the side plate and frame meet and under the clutch plate to eliminate any sloppy tolerances. It's still a super smooth reel but the zillion G, with the hypercut, is smoother in little over a year I've had mine. I've had a steez sv on a jerkbait since late 2016 and it's still great. It's ergonomically my the most comfortable platform they make but I prefer the Steez A and Morethan as they except zillion G gears.

If you had no idea of the price difference beforehand, then fished them side by side without fidget spinning them first, I think "most" people would think it's pretty much a toss up unless:

(1)You're affected by 1.2 ounces. Personally I can fish an 8 ounce reel mounted on a 5 ounce rod all day long if the setup is reasonably balanced and never feel fatigued in the slightest. My lower back would start barking before that happens, but that's just me. If for whatever reason owning a super light reel spins your top, then get the Steez. If you come from multiple generations of accountants who never did physical activity, then get the Steez. If that's the case, 1.2 ounces will take you down fast, man. Scary.?

(2)You have a hand size and shape that dictates one is more comfortable than the other. There's no certainty here unless "you" feel them both for yourself. There's no such thing as universal ergonomics, AFAIK. Everyone is different.

The good news here is that you'll be sitting pretty regardless of which one you choose. They're both magnificent user friendly reels.

If you like really nice reels, get the Steez.  :)   It balances very nicely on a 3.8-ounce 843C Conquest. And on an 844C.

And I can fish a 22-ounce Daiwa spinning reel on an 11' rod all day while getting battered by the breakers and the wind on Hatteras Island. It's a nicely balanced outfit, too.

I have both. I'm ambivalent about using the zillion or the steez - there hasn't been a single time where I thought to myself 'man I really need to move the steez to this rod'. And many of my rods are sub 4oz.

As @iabass8mentioned earlier, tolerances are a little tighter on the steez but the Zillion is so smooth you'll sometimes wonder if it's doing anything. The new gear cut is a winner.

Yeah the Zillion is easily the smoothest reel I've personally fished with.   Bomb casting a 3/8th chatterbait, and then slow rolling it on this reel is pure butter.   I can't imagine a reel being smoother, Steez or otherwise.

When all you guys were talking about the clicking drag I was like so what all my reels have clicking drags.......not until I had it in hands did I realize it has a saltwater type clicking drag, not just when you turn the drag dial.  That is so freaking cool!    I'm not sure what other reels offer that, but what a brilliant little detail.    Do the new Steez reels offer that?

I have the OG steez, but nothing of recent vintage.    I really want another Steez, but this new Zillion delivers everything I could possibly want in a reel.   I'd just be getting another Steez because I'm a Daiwa fanboy, and dudes always want the flagship models regardless of the law of diminishing returns ?

A clicking drag? No thank you.

Seriously? They put a clicker on it?

Yep, and it's freaking sweet!

I can't think of any downside, and audible drags have some nice advantages.

It's cooler than cool. What's the matter for you?

Yes. It's just a spring and pin in the sidewall of the upper drag washer that clicks against the wall of the main gear. It could be easily removed if you didn't like it

Nothing like the sound of a hot steelhead peeling off line racing all over the river- Love the sound and have added clickers to all my reels that came without.
