Jeffrey Walker Posted September 17, 2022 Posted September 17, 2022 starting to appreciate these more and have a few more waistline 1) what is your preferred shallow diving crankbait, medium diving, and deep diving crankbaits? 2) are there any large shallow crankbaits? I mostly fish for size not quantity. 3) do you think a deep diving crankbaits Require a different set up and shallow or medium meaning do you need to have your power Rod, And if so what power 4) What’s the best crankbait for Ponds? 2 Quote
Cbump Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 Do you not like the crankbaits guaranteed to catch bass thread? 3. Yes imo. My shallow cranking rod is a Daiwa Glass Tatula medium with 6.3 gear reel. My deep crank rod is a Daiwa Kage MH deep crank rod with 5.5 gear reel. Quote
Super User Bankc Posted September 19, 2022 Super User Posted September 19, 2022 1. It changes with the season and lake. 2. Depends on what you mean by large. But if you're wanting something really large, a swimbait or glide bait might be a better option. 3. Yes, a stiffer rod is needed for deep divers. Otherwise, your rod will be bent halfway over just retrieving the thing and you'll have no give left should you get a bite and likely tear out the treble hook immediately. 4. It changes with the season and pond. Quote
Huckfinn38 Posted September 20, 2022 Posted September 20, 2022 I have gotten real big into crankbaits this summer and early fall. I have a lot to still learn but here are my opinions on your questions 1) what is your preferred shallow diving crankbait, medium diving, and deep diving crankbaits? I actually like fishing those 8-15 ft depths where it drops to 20-30 ft of a point or ledge. I really like Rapala DTs, SK pro 4s/5s/5XD, and here recently started fishing Azuma Timmy Horton 10s & 20s. These Azumas have an amazing paint job and you can cast them a mile. Probably caught more fish on the DT 10s than any other bait this spring an summer. 2) are there any large shallow crankbaits? I mostly fish for size not quantity. Big fish hit small baits too. I try and match the hatch. Huge fan of Strike King 1.5 Squarebills, Rapala Otts Garage Slim, Rapal DT 6s/8s, and Strike King Chick Magnets. I want to get some of the Spro Little Johns because they look great. 3) do you think a deep diving crankbaits Require a different set up and shallow or medium meaning do you need to have your power Rod, And if so what power. Depends on what you call deep diving. I can use a medium heavy moderate action rod with a lure rating up to 1 oz for SK 6XDs but for anything bigger I have been using a swimbait rod that is 7'11, heavy/fast action with a lure rating up to 2 oz. This rod wears me out throwing 10XDs, 6th Sense Cloud 9 C20s, and C25s. I am building a new rod with a lot of glass in it to soften it. This will be moderate action and medium heavy power with a lure rating up to 2oz. I have recently started using some of the Berkley Dredgers and right now they are some of my favorite deep divers. They are about 25-40% smaller than other crankbaits that dive to similar depths. Reel wise the Tatuala 150 with the 5.5:1 gear ratio is awesome. Some of the guys on here turned me on to it. 4) What’s the best crankbait for Ponds? I rarely fish ponds anymore but I will bank fish at lakes some. Any of the shallow crankbaits listed above will work. Good to find a rocky point at these ponds or an area with gravel. 4 Quote

papajoe222 Posted September 21, 2022 Posted September 21, 2022 For big shallow baits, I like Boooyah XCH 5/8oz. and the Mann's 1-Minus. My favorite shallow cranks are Norman's Fat Boy and Live Target Flat side. Med. I like the Spro Little Jon and Norman's Middle N. Deep is relative as I rarely crank any deeper than 18ft.-20ft. but the Bomber FatFree Shad and Switchback can reach down there along with a Storm Hot N Tot. For shallow and med. runners I use cranking sticks that I've built on Med. and MH-Mod/Fast action blanks and 6.3:1 Daiwas. For the deep stuff I pair a Daiwa 5.5:1 on an old St. Croix MH that is closer to a heavy Mod/Fast. 1 Quote
