throttleplate Posted September 17, 2022 Posted September 17, 2022 At the river yesterday i came upon this woman fishing and couldnt resist asking her why she holds her rig upside down and if she likes using it that way. She told me she knows its upside down, she can put the handle on the other side but has been fishing like this for many years and she catches fish. She allowed me to take a pic for bass resource so you all can see that some of us just like to do the opposite of whats right and still have an exciting day of fishing. 11 Quote

She always has people come up to her and tell her its wrong. I didnt tell her i just asked her why she uses it upside down. Quote

Super User geo g Posted September 18, 2022 Super User Posted September 18, 2022 I was watching a show about Alaska Wilderness Living and the Native American woman was using the spinnerbait rod the exact same way as the women in your pic. She had no problem either! 1 Quote
TriStateBassin106 Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 I'm more annoyed at the undersized fish on the stringer than the way she's holding a reel. I'm guessing she doesn't have a fishing license? Get Fish and Game on the phone lol. Quote

You pinch the line with your thumb against the rod, and just lift it up with the same timing you would straighten your index finger when doing it "right", the reel remains upside down or sideways the whole time. Usually, you see folks doing this with bait, though I've seen it with lures, and as the OP found out, it works, and folks who do it have no intention of changing. 1 Quote

I had a friend who fished a spinning reel like this but he casted with the reel on the bottom like normal and then flipped it after the cast. 1 Quote
Super User Tennessee Boy Posted September 18, 2022 Super User Posted September 18, 2022 Well it sounds like fishing this way is a thing. All it needs is a good name and maybe some technique specific rods and I’m sure it could become very popular. ? 1 1 Quote

Super User NYWayfarer Posted September 18, 2022 Super User Posted September 18, 2022 I find this is a common habit for those that start fishing with Spincast reels. On those combos the reel is on top and the handle on the opposite side. It then feels foreign when they pick up a spinning rig for the first time having the reel on the bottom of the rod. 2 Quote
Super User king fisher Posted September 18, 2022 Super User Posted September 18, 2022 Did you ask her permission to put her picture up on the internet? If you didn't maybe you should remove it. She probably simply wanted to go fishing, not have her picture plastered on a web sit and ridiculed by people she doesn't know. 2 Quote
