Seems like hi vis mono would be a big mistake since it goes all the way to the lure.

I like 14 pound test Suffix Elite camo for baitcasting, prefer premium braids + a leader for spin (for the better sensitivity/bite detection.

Seems that way to me too, but I like to see my line and I still catch fish on hi-vis. Caught eighteen yesterday including a 20 inch smallie. Not sure if I could do better with clear line but that is why i am asking. Always trying to evolve and get better. It could be that I am catching the aggressive fish and the not so aggressive are put off by seeing the line. I just don't know so I'm leaning on you guys for help.

Do you use a hi-vis or clear?

Clear, but if you can find "smoke" it blends perfectly with Tennessee River water.

I'll use hi-vis braid but with a clear mono leader. For straight mono I like clear, green & smoke depending on what type of water I'm fishing. My favorite mono is Suffix Advance copoly. I also like Mean Green. Maxima & Yo Zuri Hybrid. I replaced my previous favorite Defier Armilo  (expensive) with Advance.

A couple points about mono:

1: Sometimes on a river, when you get in current and get hung up, you just need to break it off...there may not be an option.

2: I had this discussion with Denny Brauer about mono. He like to flip with it because he can see the line jump on a strike...not so much with braid. He was also complaining about braid cutting into the wood. (this was along time ago...and he may have a different opinion now).

It's hard to argue against plain simple Trilene XT

Good lines and readily available. On sale all season long somewhere.

Good Day All,

I started angling using mono. Back in the day it was Stren or Trilene. Then when braid became available I tried several types. I soon realized all the extra fun involved with using braid such as grooved out line guides. The high cost was just one of the factors that brought me back to mono. These days ultra lite fishing using low cost Zebco bulk spool mono in four pound. The fall fish catching is on here in SE AZ. Small two inch curly tailed grub on a 1/32 oz jig worked about all the newly flooded structures. We are grateful this year's monsoon season has brought several of the regional lakes back to full pool from being several meters down for so long. Here are a couple of the noteworthy fall fishy fun.

The weather is lovely and so is the catching! Four pound mono works rather well. Cheers!

Big Game.  Either 10# or 15# depending on the conditions.

Early, but I'm wiped out so won't read through all the posts.  No doubt this line has been mentioned.  I like Siege Neon Tangerine.  Mostly I use 8# and 12#.

I use big game 12lb on everything, green, bait casters and spinning rigs. I really like it, seems to be as far as strength and, abrasion.

I'm not a fan of braid, only have it on my pitching rig, and my dock rig for wacky rigging.

I have been using Sufix Seige 10lb for crankbaits this year and it's pretty good line for the money but my favorite is Sunline Defier.  It holds up better, lasts longer, and casts slightly better.  It's almost 3x the cost though.

I prefer mono and this thread is like a breath of fresh air?. I will use some fluro on a baitcaster, never on a spinning setup. My favorite line of all time is no longer made, it was Berkley Tournament Strength Mono in Photochromic.  When I was pro staff for Bass Pro I used Excel and it was good since I got it free and changed it often.  I’m still using excel but have been looking for a better option with better visibility.

If I remember correctly the  Bass Pro brand used to be made in the USA. I used it and liked it. Last time I was at Bass Pro I noticed their brand was made in China. Anyone notice any difference in quality now?

Good Day!

I have over many years purchased several spools of the BassPro Crappie Maxx in 4 pound mono. Interesting line for sure. It has virtues of being strong with a small overall diameter when compared to other 4 pound mono. It is rather stiff, not to the point of not being usable. It works reasonably well for some applications. I've used it on both spinning reels and spin cast reels with reasonable results. Due to the stiff quality you do have to be diligent not to twist it up too much when spooling it on. It does relax some with exposure to water and heat (angling here in Arizona there is plenty of heat).

I have not looked at where it was manufactured. I have used it for over 10 years and they have been fairly consistent.

I don't use a lot of this line but I do use it. I posted a 5 pound large mouth bass I recently caught in the recent catches thread. That bass was caught using this 4 pound BassPro Crappie Maxx spooled on a Zebco 33 Micro. It was tough enough to hold that beast as it thrashed about in the tree limbs and then later going and holding in deep water till it fatigued. It can come together nicely as a complete successful package (angler, rod, reel, line, bait, and a well tied knot).

Good angling! Cheers!

Can't edit my post for some reason.  I bought some 10# Big Game in Solar Collector.  It is a very bright green on the spool, but haven't put any on a reel yet.  Am hoping it is highly visible as a single stand on the water.

I use xl on spinning , Big Game on casting.

On my wormin rod I use xl clear blue floro because of its high visibility  . 17 lb test,  only .015 inches dia.   and very difficult to break .

There was a time when the BPS Excel was great line. That line is not what it was 20 years ago. I was told it was Trilene XL. So I was told. What it is now I have no idea. But they (BPS) will stand behind their products if you are not satisfied. I remember the Photochromic from back in the 80’s I believe and it was a good quality line.

When I worked for BPS, Pure Fishing, parent company of Trilene and Stren, made Excel. For anyone who wants to know, Sunline made the floro line. I don't know if those companies still make their line or not. You're right, BPS does stand behind their products.

Right now, I'm 99% mono and all I use is Excel but I've had my spools for a while. Never have any problems with it. I use braid on one rod, only because I still have a spool in stock. Once it's gone that rod will be mono too. I have toyed with the idea of trying McCoy copolymer, just haven't pulled the trigger.

I was using Sufix Tritanium Plus, but just ran out of my last bulk spool of 12lb. I also use a lot of Big Game, but up for trying something different.

Seeing quite a few suggestions for Sufix Siege and Advance or Sunline Super Natural or Defier. May have to order some of each and see what I like.

Looks the spinning reel needs a spool shim to load the line evenly....?

Original Stren or Trilene XL are my preferred lines.  My local tackle shop was out of each of them and I got a spool of Trilene Big Game.  I using it right now, but I prefer the other 2.   I fish with 3 rods/reels.  I fish 2 to 4 times a week.  My routine is I change line on 1 reel every Friday night so I change line every 3 weeks.   I like the confidence fresh line gives me so I stay away from expensive lines.

I've never tried fluro.  I've tried braid and hated most of it.  I didn't hate Sufix 832, but  still have some of what I consider normal braid problems with it.  (I didn't change it every 3 weeks)
