When Did It all Come together

Of course when it comes to fishing you will never truly figure it all out but when did it all “click” for you. When did you realize that maybe you did know what you’re doing and started consistently catching fish.

 

For me it all started this year I’ve been bass fishing for maybe 4~5 years out of the 19 I’ve been alive so I don’t have much under my belt. But something about this year has allowed me to look back and realize how far I’ve come.I went from skunking almost every trip to now not only being confident in knowing I will catch fish almost every time I go out. Also being able to put others on fish and their first fish at that. Looking back at this year alone I’ve had my eureka moment and feel like I’ve progressed more in these past 9 months than I have over the last few years

I’m with these guys. Many years ago when fishing grubs, tubes and rubber worms all clicked for river smallies. A lot of cranking followed with Rapalas, Rebel Craws and Rattle Traps. I don’t believe I’ve used live bait for a bass since ‘76 or ‘77. Used a lot of Mepps, Panther Martins and CP Swings used back then.

I don’t know when it clicked for me, or if it has. I do catch more fish now but, even though I feel I’m still learning, after all these years. I mean I don’t get to mad at myself for getting skunked.

I think what I’m trying to say is, I like trying to catch fish as much as catching fish. The ultimate goal of course is to catch fish. Don’t know how to explain it.

It came together for me in the summer of 2005. I was a surveyor on three small lakes for the Minnesota Dept of Natural Resources. I had a truck and a 16 foot Lund Rebel at my disposal to complete my surveys every day on these lakes, but during periods of down time I was permitted to fish. I figured it out on my own that summer by experimentation. Trial and error for about 5 months.

as soon as it does ill let you know. i mean i catch some fish almost every time i go but ill have days where i catch 3 then there will be a tournament 3 days later and it takes 18 pounds to win. then i have days where i catch a bunch but the next week i cant find a fish to save my life. august and september are the worst.

It's been over 50 years, 5 days a week, I'm still trying to get it all together in my mind.  As soon as I feel I have figured it out, they throw me a curve ball!  Lol, it is a life long process!  I learn something different every trip.

I’ve been fishing avidly my entire 30 years of life. I’m not sure when it all came

together, but over the last 10 years, I’ve gotten to spend a lot of time on the water and I know I’ve picked up more knowledge and skill in the last 10 years than the prior 20. I think I’ve always been a good angler, even as a kid. But now I consider myself a decent bass fisherman. Getting my boat 10 years ago and joining this site and connecting with other bass anglers also increased my skill exponentially I believe. I still have so many things I want to improve on, still a lot of holes in my game and a lifetime of learning to do.

For me it was the first time every decision and change I made worked. 
Problem with that is those days just don’t come often enough

The thought of having it all "come together" is like a crazy dream. Hell, even when I do dream of fishing, I'm still losing fish.

With bass fishing, things kind of came together in the last few years. I mean, I had fished for bass years ago but only recently took to it again more seriously. And it wasn't until I started thinking big bass, that I started catching big bass. Other things came with it, like fishing in the right places, using the right lure and presentation, moving around a lot, fishing at night...all this played into my program and my comfort zone. The best part about it all was getting there, which was (and still is) a total blast!

I'm sure I've bought over a hundred over the years. The only things that've come together are the sides of my wallet. I must not have bought the right brand. Please don't tell me the right brand is Loomis. I'll end up living in a van, down by the river.

I went to a Sports Show at the Ag Center here in Memphis in the fall of 1996.  One of

the exhibitors had a seminar demonstrating a new "worm". I don't remember the guy's

name, but he was a pro. Up on stage he was flipping hookless baits into the crowd

with precision!

 

The guy was representing some company no one in this part of the country had ever

heard of before. I guess they had been around for awhile out west, Arizona and The

Peoples Republic of California. Nothing much special as far as I could tell. 

 

My daughter was taking riding lessons at a Hunter/Jumper club just out of town, in

the country. I took her to the lessons, but sitting there for a couple of hours was

incredibly boring. I starting getting to knows the owner and asked if I could fish his

pond. He didn't fish and as far as he knew it had NEVER BEEN FISHED!

 

Well, the pond was about 18 acres surrounded by grass fields, a horse farm.  I was

pretty excited, but I was 35 and hadn't fished much in 15 years. My gear was garage

sale quality and the Zebco that came with the package probably had the original line

still spooled. I had a few topwater lures that I got from my dad and a spinnerbait. 

 

I had purchased a few packs of worms and some hooks at the sports show. I decided

to give these plastics a shot. The guy at the show had rigged a few for me and I

thought I could handle sticking them myself. So, off I go to my daughter's lesson.

 

In retrospect, I think these fish had never seen a lure and were probably originally

stocked before the owner bought the land. Pretty much full grown and virgin.  So,

you probably think I'm going to tell you I caught a 10 lb bass on the first cast, but it

was only about 8 on the 3rd cast.  The next day I talked to a friend at work and he took

me to a tackle shop and I ask him to pick out everything I needed. 

 

Now I'm geared up and ready to learn/ re-learn the sport. I told my friend about the

worms, but he wasn't jazzed about the  "Japanese" baits. He was not impressed with

my Yamamoto Senkos or the Gamakatsu hooks.  That was a very special time, I didn't

really understand how important a 10 lb bass was.

I don't believe it has, or perhaps ever will.   

 

The closest perhaps I've come is when I found the Roboworm around 02-03.   Since that time the skunk has stayed out of the boat at least.
