I was fishing with my buddy today on his boat, and we were about to hit the end of a cove. There was another angler at the end of the cove fishing towards us on the same side of the bank. We kinda went behind him to the other side, the bank that the other angler had already fished. Basically we switched sides. Now we were fishing back to back with each other and about 40 feet apart, casting the opposite direction of course. All of sudden he was mad and asked “what are you doing and why are you fishing behind me”.

Did we do something wrong there? I am kinda confused.

If he had already fished the area, and you weren’t riding his stern, don’t see a problem. When somebody catches a fish behind me, I usually holler back…” I left that one for ya” but if they catch another one….” Hey I missed that one…he’s mine”.

Ethics or etiquette questions always open a hornets nest because we only hear one side of the situation and we all know there’s 3 sides to every story.  ?

Going off what you said, unless you were within a cast length no matter what direction you were heading, no harm no foul, I can see the other guy getting a little peeved if you were too close.  Personally I wouldn’t have cared.

this is literally what happened lol Our boat was only trolling. There was no wake or whatsoever. In an area like that, I couldn’t imagine what could have happened that ticked him off.

Anyway, we left the area to avoid further conflict.

Am I to understand that y'all were (at least temporarily) passing the other boat down the bank opposite the one he was fishing?

If that's what happened I don't know why he'd have even cared, much less got his back up over it. He'd lose his mind fishing here.

 That’s exactly what happened.

Anyway, I think I got this figured out. I and my friend are new to boat fishing. When the other boat was mad at us, I thought there were some unwritten rules that we were not aware of.

He was nice enough to let you fish his lake.  You should have given him more space.  ?

I don't think you did anything wrong, however I always like to give other anglers a wide birth.   Not even so much to not fish waters they are headed towards fishing, but simply because I know I like to solitude of fishing and would appreciate others giving me the same wide berth.

i will lay here and ponder about what the angry man would have done if i was wading out from the bank chest deep.

Would he fish right through me?

You were fishing his dead water.  If you kept a safe distance, you did everything right and nothing wrong.  It’s hard to fix stupid, and he fits the bill.

Was there a tournament going on that he might have been participating in? Tournaments have specific rules as to how close you can fish to a competitor. He might have thought you were a competitor.

So let me get the facts straight...you were fishing behind a guy instead of cutting him off all the while giving him plenty of room on a public body of water? Your such a jerk

I just checked. There will be two tournaments tomorrow, nothing today. It’s the California delta.

That was what I thought of myself when he screamed at us.

This actually could be the case. We had a guy run up on us at 0610am one morning. He was clearly angry at us. Told us first cast wasn’t until 630. Ok bro, we’re not in your tourney lol

You must have walked across his yard, ie "Get off of my grass!" You should have stayed if you were on 'em.
