PourMyOwn Posted September 12, 2022 Posted September 12, 2022 I use flukes to fish shallow pads and hyacinths. If I'm not using braid, I've found that at least 17 lb mono (.016) makes a big difference. I twitch them erratically and anything lighter that 17 doesn't stay straight . Lighter line tends to curl right in front of the bait. 1 Quote
rangerjockey Posted September 12, 2022 Posted September 12, 2022 The Caffine shad will cast a little easier than the fluke but personally I wouldn't use braid unless I had about 12ft of leader on it. The barrel swivel helps it cast without making it fall too fast. I like it to just let it spiral down just out of sight and give it a twitch and repeat. If you want it to fall faster a 1 inch finish nail works well. 1 Quote
ErieCan Posted September 12, 2022 Posted September 12, 2022 I fish submerged grass, 7-12'. I like caffeine shads the best with an Owner Twistlock 3/32oz 5/0 weighted hook. Make sure its rigged straight. Cast, let it sink, two or three twitches/jerks, let it sink. For me, it worka best on schooled up bass. Especially September/October when the big schools of shinners start balling up. 2 Quote

This is the hook to use if you need the bait to sink. Flukes are a shallow water bait for me but sometimes I need to combat the current. Allen Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted September 13, 2022 Super User Posted September 13, 2022 If you run the hook through the nose you can add a small bullet weight to counter the fluke rising when you move it. For keel weighting you can either use a weighted hook, or clamp a large split shot to the hook. 1 Quote
r83srock Posted September 13, 2022 Posted September 13, 2022 I go back and forth between fishing a fluke on a spinning rod and a baitcaster. I do like skipping docks with a fluke on spinning tackle, but my preference overall is a 7’ mh fast baitcaster, and 15# big game. I like throwing that bait right in cover and twitching it out. I like a VMC heavy wire round bend 4/0 hook, but a Gamakatsu round bend 4/0 will get better hook ups with less effort, and won’t tear the bait up as bad. I use both depending on cover and depth. Twitch twitch pause… Quote
Super User Munkin Posted September 14, 2022 Super User Posted September 14, 2022 This is what I have been using most of the year. The river current this year was strong so the bait just washed away. While I don't like pouring soft plastics I do make most of the flukes I use. This color was a mistake by a buddy I was teaching. He shoot like 30 of them before I noticed so we just used them. Dumbbassanglr Posted September 14, 2022 Posted September 14, 2022 Don’t overthink it. 4/0 heavy wire ewg is the hook. Super fluke. Just learn to be patient, soft jerks, long pauses if needed. If you overwork the fluke it’s not usually as effective. Maybe lose the swivel and learn the fg leader knot. 1 Quote

Its the angle from the spiral to the hook point that is messed up. The point always wants to pop out from when I texposed it tearing up the back of the fluke. I find that regular ewg hooks texposed in the fluke the hook point is more in line with the back of the fluke and wont pop out. 1 Quote

I use a VMC hook that is a little thinner and shaped different. Flukes are a clear water bait so I fish them on 8-10lb Floro with a spinning rod. Heavy duty EWG hooks are not an option for me.
