Would like to use a Baitcast rig to cast light drop shot. 1/16 or 1/8 weight.
Reel recommendations ?

Rod recommendations?

Rod Power —. Med / Heavy??

Fast action/Extrafast ??

Thanks in advance.

C'mon...I don't think you need to be so harsh.

The answer is no, MH is not the right choice.  A ML spinning rod and 6# line is my

suggestion.  The BFS rig I mentioned is really designed for advanced fishermen

with more money than sense.  It would not be your first combination.

Talk about not needing to be "so harsh." ?  My BFS rigs are more expensive than those you cited and are absolutely worth the price.  If you want a quality BFS rig that weighs under 8 oz then you'll need to pay a significant premium.

1/16 oz drop shot on a baitcast setup is a heck of a rabbit hole to go down.  You really gotta want to go down that hole and seems like OP really hasn't given it much thought.  To me, that means he's not ready.

i tried it with my Phenix Feather 7'1' LIGHT and Curado BFS.  it worked fine.

the baitkeeper tab is very much in the wrong place for me and dropshot.  i do fish a 3/16 weight most times.  1/16 would required me to whip it more i think.  i would make a mess.

BFS just does not fit me well. I was trying to sell mine at cost, but didn't find a buyer.

i like mine in the winter time.

at sleepy;0'clock, i've grabbed my BFS thinking it was my heavier Phenix Feather set up.  get to the lake and notice i brought the light rig, hoping to throw heavier baits.  duh!!  i need to put red tape on the BFS.  they are a mirror image of each other at Zero dark thirty.

Just curious.... When I went (and still am) down the BFS rabbit hole, the baits was the thing that stumped me. I have found a few that suited me and bass fishing in general but I think I need the right conditions to make everything work... wind, water conditions, and what mood the bass are in. On off days, it could start out bass focused with the lures and next thing it either becomes a dink fest or I am suddenly catching everything but bass.

Two lures that I have confidence in are small swimbaits (Easy Shiner and 3in Spark Shad) with a 1/16 or 1/8oz head and the Baby Pop Max. Honorable mentions, 1/16oz Shakey Head and 4in or 6in Roboworm and the Megabass Great Hunting humpback.

I have only fished it a couple of times using a Japanese crankbait. My first cast was on the

White River below Bull Shoals Dam and wallah, about a 2# brown trout!  That's a big fish for

that rig and I knew then it wasn't for me.

I may be in the minority here but when I use UL or L BFS rods I have to be really careful not to go too heavy. Some of the normal "spinning" techniques are too heavy for light bfs gear. A 1/8 oz weight with a standard dropshot bait is actually pretty heavy.

For me BFS is limited to tiny plugs, small weightless plastics and 1/32-1/64 oz heads with a small plastic. A lot of that other stuff can be comfortably fished on med powered casting rods with a regular Alphas type reel and lighter line. I don't really consider that BFS.

I fish 1/8oz dropshot weight with finesse worm all day with Curado 70, 50e series or alphas SV105 with just regular medium or medium light rod. No need to get fancy with those BSF gears. 1/8oz weight + 1/8oz plastic that 1/4oz kind of aerodynamic enough to cast with regular gear.

I really think a lot of ppl here always jump the gun, recommend thing that might not even benefit OP as much. They just go by what the feel right without any fact support from OP.
@Tatulatardis right if OP doesn’t even know about what rod power to use with 1/16-1/8oz, and we already started giving him BFS. How about if this only his setup? If he wanna use 10-12lb line?

What rig is it? Might be interested. Looking for stream wading set up.

Rod too wimpy?  There are other bfs rods and even other trout rods which sounds like what you have.

What is your budget and why a baitcasting rod & reel?

The BFS anglers will push their high end tackle to achieve your goal of casting 1/16 oz drop shot weight.

I have been fishing drop shot rigs over 25 years andcdon’t Own a 1/16 oz drop shot weight,  3/32 is the lightest I would use, 1/8 is my 1st choice. I don’t cast a drop shot over 30’ and prefer spinning tackle using either 5 lb Maxima UG copolymer  or 7 lb Sniper FC.

Power rod MLF or MXF both work, length 6’10” to 7’3”.

Thank you. Couple issues for me is right handed, rod longer than what I’m looking for and a bit over my budget :)

Nice set up!
