Super User TOXIC Posted September 8, 2022 Super User Posted September 8, 2022 Not being political but look at how local government deals with criminals. Catch and release is a big problem in a lot of the more crime ridden cities. I worked in Washington, DC for a number of years, my office was at 1700 Pennsylvania Avenue, traveled to San Fran a lot and have relatives living in Chicago and Portland. There is a common thread. 7 Quote
Super User T-Billy Posted September 8, 2022 Super User Posted September 8, 2022 Bought a house in my childhood hometown of about 350 people in May. CCW rate around here is high. Sheriff, Judge, and Prosecutor ain't lenient. Crime rate is low. Biggest crime this summer was some crackheads stealing the converters off the Frontier Communication trucks. Most folks around here do a pretty good job of loving their neighbors. It's a nice place to live. I feel blessed to be here. 2 Quote

Violent crimes are merely a symptom of a drugs and alcohol problem which are, in most cases, merely a symptom of a much deeper rooted breakdown of society problem. How do we become a moral society again? The first step is to stop promoting immoral behavior as normal. The road to hell is paved with good intentions. The demise of the nuclear family began in the 1930's and got a boost in the 1960's. If we start changing now, maybe things will be improved by 2122 3 Quote

Super User DitchPanda Posted September 9, 2022 Super User Posted September 9, 2022 I grew up in Harris county Texas in the 90s...I heard a statistic once that at that time it was the most dangerous place in the United States. Not sure if that's true but it was bad. The last 20 years I've lived in a town of 2300 people in Iowa...I'd never move back to a city. 2 Quote

It’s not good, but I don’t think it’s the most dangerous place in the US. But I was born and raised in Baltimore, and many would say it ranks up there. But it really depends on what part of the city you’re talking about. Which is how it is in most places. Quote

There just isn't enough resources to catch all the fish anymore, so they have to pick and choose which ones to target. I saw that story yesterday about the lady who was found near Memphis. She was nabbed by a guy and forced into a van. They found the body 1/2 mile away. Sickening to say the least. As citizens we have the ability to defend against violence but no defense against somebody under the influence crossing the center line or running a light/stop sign. Quote
VolFan Posted September 9, 2022 Posted September 9, 2022 I grew up in Memphis in the 80’s and early 90’s. My dad owned a liquor store near the Mall of Memphis, which was nicknamed the Mall of Murder (it has its own Wikipedia page). It’s the same as it ever was. I used to walk to the mall from my dad’s store to play video games or see a movie. I never had a problem. That said, I wouldn’t do it at night. I live in Charlotte now and there’s places here I stay out of unless there’s a reason, but it’s nowhere near what the bad parts of Memphis or DC were like. It’s something that every place has, and has had, and will have , forever. There is no Eutopia. The best you can do is be a good person, teach you and yours to be good people, and help where you can with social programs. 2 Quote

I drive the speed limit no matter the flow of traffic. It ticks so many people off that they hammer the throttle and zoom around me even on residential streets. Moments after the display of their lead foot most times i end up next to or behind them at a red light or stop sign. This is my every day life in the Jacksonville florida area. Just imagine what you have there with 1 million + people. Quote

My violative cases get forwarded to the Dept of Justice when there's enough evidence. They decide if they are going to follow through or not. At one point, they made a point of going after first time violators. Right now, its only repeat violators that have a higher risk score. I presume their thought on this is to just try and catch the big fish. When they catch the little ones, they slap them on the wrist and then release them because there isn't enough resources to contain all of them. At one point there was though. I'm not going to get into which administration was better about enforcement during my 13 year tenure but it was not the current or previous one... 1 Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted September 9, 2022 Super User Posted September 9, 2022 Seems like those areas that had problems in the past get revitalized, yet, an area with little previous problems become a chronic problem. Just a vicious cycle I guess. Quote

I was stationed at Jax Naval Air station, I was a Seabee in CBU-410 from 1980 to 81, which now has been decomissioned and another CBU has replaced it. Orange Park was a town over and had a greyhound race track. Jacksonville was a blast back then as the jax beach area wasnt even developed yet, just a bunch of neat little hole in the wall bars and a few large hotels. Quote

Very little crime, schools were good, never felt crowded, lots of woods and access to fishing waters. Mostly friendly folk in my area. Fast forward 50 years: Lots of crime, drugs are rampant, most public schools are below average , woods are thinning faster than my hairline, a lot of my hunting and fishing spots are now in subdivisions… Still has some friendly, good nieghbors, but not as many…most of the communities just outside of Duval county are great places to live, which is evident by all the people coming here from up north and out west… Quote

Super User Log Catcher Posted September 10, 2022 Super User Posted September 10, 2022 There was a police officer shot here last night answering a call. Police were able to return fire and wounded the shooter He died later at a hospital. The officer is okay and has been released from the hospital. So far we've had 34 murders here this year. We had 37 last year so we will probably set a new record this year. Quote

We were doing a job in camden and my dad was like if you go to the truck lock the door while you are in it looking for parts or whatever. One of the construction crews came in and had your normal big ass job box that probably weighed close to a ton and they locked up all their ladders and brake on top. We told them yeah you don't want to leave that here overnight. They must not have been from around the area becasue they balked and said no way anyone is taking this. We said ok. Next morning all that was left was the indentations in the ground from the weight of the box lol Camden has come around though in the past 10-15 years. not what i would call a safe place but not anything close to what it was Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted September 10, 2022 Super User Posted September 10, 2022 And here I came to this thread think I lived on Staten Island NY about a mile from the infamous landfill. Summers you could smell it even from a mile away. NY has really declined in recent years. Pandemic, inflation, bail reform, etc. have set the city back to the days before Time Square was cleaned up. It is very sad to see the decline. Hopefully people will show their displeasure come November… 1 Quote

The homeless here in fargo live down on the river that runs right through the city in the summer along with the methheads. I came across their camps when walking the banks last year and while casting anyone could have come up behind me and clobbered me and toss me into the river to die. 1 Quote
