Super User Mobasser Posted September 8, 2022 Super User Posted September 8, 2022 I had an uncle who was a bid man for the carpenters union in KC years ago. He helped me get my first union job. I had so many days I thought about quitting, because it was such hard work. I ended up retiring from the carpentry trade- 35yrs later. These days, they can't even get guys to show up. I eventually tested out and became a journeyman, which paid better. The journeymen carried more respect on the big jobs also. Trade work of any kind is not for everyone. It can be very hard work, and many guys are not cut out for it. 1 Quote

The fact is if you do something long enough something mindnumbingly improbable is going to happen to you. Hopefully it's not followed by life changing results. Career ending injury here. Tore my rhomboid and trapezoid muscles off my shoulder blade. Happened 10 years ago. Fortunately, I'm still in the industry working in a different capacity. Had I not stumbled on the doctor(on a fluke) that discovered the affliction and pioneered the surgery, I'd have put a bullet in my head a long time ago. Still suffer from pain, discomfort, and dexterity issues daily but, not to the extent it was prior to my 3rd surgery. 4 1 Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted September 9, 2022 Super User Posted September 9, 2022 I see so many union carpenters in Boston that are in their 50's and cant walk without a limp or hunched over. Sad really. Their bodies are broken down and haven't made it to retirement. Quote

Hottest place on the job site. I didn’t mind way back then, but circumstances changed and I ended up fixing radios/radars etc.. in the A/C for 38 years. No regrets. 2 Quote

Nah I was just setting a trap and the roof was steep as can be. had to go up a valley to the ridge, scooch across to a dormer and drop down on top of it. Then anchored the trap to the fascia 1 Quote
