Super User Hammer 4 Posted September 2, 2022 Super User Posted September 2, 2022 So, your sheathing a roof or walls, you have 4 or 5, size 8 nails lined up between your fingers on your non hammering hand. Your under pressure from the boss, or client to get that job done ASAP, and in your quest to get'r done, you wind up hitting one or 2 nails in your hand and nail 2 of your fingers together, or maybe you just drive 1 nail through a single finger ? Well, I'll admit in my early days while sheathing a roof which was a 6/12, I nailed 2 of my fingers together, surprisingly there was no pain, except for when I had to pull the dang nails out. That was the only time I've ever done that..lol 4 3 Quote
Woody B Posted September 2, 2022 Posted September 2, 2022 I've never done that. My Dad and Grandfather were building contractors. I worked for them when I was a kid. I learned a bunch just from watching my Grandfather.  He never "looked" like he was in a hurry. When nailing sheathing is just sounded like he was tapping with a hammer. No few taps, start a new nail, then more taps. It was just steady.  Kinda like bam-bam-bam-bam-bam-bam.  My Dad would like like a maniac like bambambam--------bambambam------- but in the end my Grandfather would get more done. I learned that slow, steady and methodical would out do fast and wreckless pretty much every time. I'm an auto tech. I do most jobs faster than any of the people I work with. They say it looks like I'm moving in slow motion.    There was this HUGE guy that worked for my Grandfather, then after my Grandfather retired he worked for my Dad. I was 15 or so, and was up on a roof doing something. The roof had the tar paper on it but no shingles yet. (probably 6 in 12 pitch or so) I was walking along the roof and stepped on the top of a row of tar paper. I probably stepped above the nails, it came loose, I slid down and fell right off the roof. This HUGE guy was right under where I fell off. He just reached his arms out and caught me before I hit the ground then just kinda stood me up. He said he had caught my Dad and my Grandfather before when they fell off a house.  3 1 Quote
Super User Catt Posted September 2, 2022 Super User Posted September 2, 2022 Broke the bone in my left thumb into 3 pieces twice with a framing hammer. Shot a 16d nail through my left hand with a nail gun. Cut a 45° chunk out of my left thumb with a hand saw (don't ask). Broke my nose with a pair of #9 Kliens. Permanently destroyed my lower back & both knees walking stilts installing acoustical ceilings.  2 Quote
Super User Mobasser Posted September 2, 2022 Super User Posted September 2, 2022 You guys know Ive driven many nails over the years.      Early on, smacked my thumb too many times. I think my thumb was taped up all that first summer.          Brutal, hard work! Yesterday had to pick my wife up at the airport. She went for a couple of days to visit her sister.                  I parked, and had to walk down to the terminal gate where she was coming in. By the time I made it there I was limping, and my hip was hurting. It's from all my years in construction. If you were a carpenter for very long, you'll have some physical problems from this trade.                          Once you gain experience, you'll make good money- but you'll earn every penny also. 5 Quote
Way north bass guy Posted September 2, 2022 Posted September 2, 2022 Meh, you carpenters are all the same, breaking your backs over some light weight wood! Try building these guys every day. I’ve been doing this full time for over 25 years now.  (I’m kidding, any construction is hard on the body ). 6 Quote
Global Moderator 12poundbass Posted September 3, 2022 Global Moderator Posted September 3, 2022 I’ve shot my self twice with a nail gun. One was a smooth shank 16 and the other a ring shank 8. Pulled both out and went back to work after I calmed down. I got lucky and didn’t hit anything major either time and didn’t hurt until the adrenaline wore off 10 minutes afterwards. ? 3 Quote
flatcreek Posted September 3, 2022 Posted September 3, 2022 I’ve still got all my fingers and toes but it’s a wonder.. 1 Quote
Super User slonezp Posted September 4, 2022 Super User Posted September 4, 2022 Crippled pipefitter here... A carpenter buddy of mine shot a nail thru his foot nailing down a floor. I couldn't help but laugh imagining him running around in circles. 1 Quote

At first just thought it got my glove. Started yanking on it and just wouldn’t budge. Looked a little closer and the screw was right through the center of my left index finger. Not sure how I didn’t feel it.   Once my brother thought it would be funny to loosen one of the wing nuts on my stilts. Ended up coming out right next to a big pane glass window, lucky I caught myself on one of the ceiling wires, however I did not the scaffold over carrying my tile right through the window. Not long after that I spiked my brothers thermos with laxative on a day I knew he’d be up on stilts all day. I don’t know how he didn’t notice, it was a ridiculous amount. Man was it hilarious to seem him take off across the job site toward the job Johnny and figure out how to get in there with his stilts on. 1 Quote

Super User flyfisher Posted September 4, 2022 Super User Posted September 4, 2022 I did construction pretty much every summer as a teenager and through my first couple years of college. Â My boss while on a roof was pulling the roofing gun up and hit the nose and it ended up shooting a roofing nail right through his big toe knuckle. Â He pulled it out and called it a day since it was like 3:30 already. Â next day he shows up and he cut his shoe so the swollen toe would have room and he could keep working. Â My dad was an electrician and used to go out on service calls and this was no different. Â He gets a call, usually something stupid but service calls are good money. Â This was an outdoor light that was out. Â He gets on his fiberglass extension ladder reaches up to unscrew and touches the metal box. Â Apparently it was wired wrong and it caused a ground and he was stuck up there until the electricity contracted his muscles enough it broke the bulb. he ended up fisxing the wiring issues and replacing the bulb. I wasn't there but when he came home i could tell something was up and he showed me his hand which had cuts from the busted bulb. Â Â 1 Quote
Global Moderator 12poundbass Posted September 4, 2022 Global Moderator Posted September 4, 2022 I used to build portable classrooms and office trailers like you see at construction sites. One day a new guy started who had quite the chip on his shoulders. About five hours into the job I hear a bunch of guys start yelling for one of the supervisors. I jump out of one of the trailers to see what’s going on and see the new guys running around, screaming, and  holding his hand. Turns out his was using the table saw, took the guard off, and was attempting to cut an arch on a piece T-111! It got bound up and kicked back cutting two of his fingers off. The blade was dull so it was more like they were ripped off than cut off.  The supervisor rushed him to the hospital and a short while later we get a call from him asking us to dig through the sawdust to try and find his fingers. Thankfully there were plenty of people searching for them because there’s no way I could dig through sawdust looking for detached digits. ?  That has to be some kind of record, five hours into a new job and you cut your fingers off. 1 Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted September 6, 2022 Super User Posted September 6, 2022 Would you rather…  1) Hit your thumb with a framing hammer? or 2) Drive a number 2 Phillips bit through your thumb nail, into the nail bed?    1 Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted September 6, 2022 Author Super User Posted September 6, 2022 Being that I've done that, I'll take # 1. I actually split my nail when I smacked it with 32 oz hammer.. 1 Quote
Super User deaknh03 Posted September 6, 2022 Super User Posted September 6, 2022 I was nailing a top plate on a wall 2 weeks ago. 20 0z wooden framing hammer slipped, bounced back and hit me in the face. GTN-NY Posted September 6, 2022 Posted September 6, 2022 Oh you guys and your war stories. I’ve been a photographer since I was 20 so 42 years of it. I’ve lead a pretty pampered life. No major injuries ever and look 15 years younger than my age. Well except for no hair.  Last Nov at 62 I started rebuilding a house from the dirt floors on up and repairing a 200+ year old barn . Holy crap do I hurt. Knees, elblows, shoulders and neck. It’s one thing after another. I’m going back to photography. I bow my head in respect to you guys! 1 Quote
Skunkmaster-k Posted September 7, 2022 Posted September 7, 2022 I cut 1/2 “ off my ring finger when my 24 “ pipe wrench slipped. The doc sewed it back on but I can’t feel it and it is mushy like tapioca pudding. Looks funny too. Oh well. 1 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted September 7, 2022 Global Moderator Posted September 7, 2022 I was putting down some vinyl plank flooring and whacked the end of my finger tip with a dead blow hammer. It just made a big flapper piece come off, made me more queasy than it actually hurt.  1 Quote

The fact is if you do something long enough something mindnumbingly improbable is going to happen to you. Hopefully it's not followed by life changing results. 1 Quote
