GRiver Posted September 1, 2022 Posted September 1, 2022 I was at Walmart a while back, always go though the clearance isle if I have time. I picked up a Shakespeare GX2 Ugly Stick…. Must have been a return, no tags or labels. A 5’6” light action. I have a Bass Pro micro lite spinning reel, it will make a nice rig and it’s a spare rig. For me or guest. I put the reel on it hung it in the rack and forgot about, not on purpose, just other things got my attention. I was in my shop and it caught my eye….You know I never fished that rig yet. I got it down rigged it it with a boot tail swim bait and headed for the dock. I am so impressed with this set up. The Gx2 is very sensitive, I could feel the boot tail vibrating and all obstacles if I bounced it on the bottom. I was skipping it between pontoons and everywhere else. I mean for the money it’s a great rod. I’ve heard people talk about them, and I even did a search here before I wrote this thread. I just want to know how I missed this rod. I don’t mean to go on and on but I’ve paid more for other rods and their not as good. What else have I skipped and missed out on? 2 Quote
newapti5 Posted September 2, 2022 Posted September 2, 2022 I once had one for a few hours. Way too heavy for bass fishing, so I returned it, before I could try out its sensitivity. 1 Quote

My favorite rod to this day is the UglyStick Carbon 7ft medium fast. Its 100% graphite, very light weight. I have fished with it for 2 solid years now, I abuse it and it still loves me as i do it. I caught my biggest fish of the year with it in river current. https://www.purefishing.com/carbon-spinning-rod-1509898?variant=1500289 3 Quote

Super User LrgmouthShad Posted September 2, 2022 Super User Posted September 2, 2022 GX2 was the first thing I used as a baitcaster. Had it paired with a $40 Kast King reel and that is what I used for a decent stint. Once, a couple months ago, I picked up the GX2 again and couldn’t believe how privileged I’d been using iRods and a Falcon. The GX2 works, is sensitive enough, and is seriously strong, but it is a heavy, clumsy rod. 2 Quote

And yet it catches fish. One of my custom built pin hooking sticks is built on and ugly stik blank. 1 Quote
