jimanchower Posted September 1, 2022 Posted September 1, 2022 Most of my stuff is braid-to-leader and the leader is almost always Maxima Ultragreen mono. I've got spools of Big Game as well but I like the stiffer Maxima. I do occasionally use a fluoro leader for one reason or another. Quote

ne_dan Posted September 2, 2022 Posted September 2, 2022 Spinning gear, braid to flourobsometimes light lb mono leader. Casting straight copoly or flouro, only thing I usually run braid on is my frog rod. However from fall through spring I'll run braid to a wire leader when the pike are up shallower and I'm either specifically targeting them or I start losing tackle to them. Quote
Super User ChrisD46 Posted September 2, 2022 Super User Posted September 2, 2022 Spinning : Braid + leader using Sunline Sniper #7 lb. FC ... You can't break this FC line very easily . For mono leaders I like Big Game #15 lb. for bait cast braid set up + leader for top water and for Co-Poly CX-X makes for a very tough leader for jigs. Quote

So went to Alberto which is simply an Albright that wraps both down and back, then out through the loop. I finish it with two tightly set half hitches. I think one of the secrets of success with both of these knots is to very tightly set both the tag and line, VERY tightly, and wet. I think you want the leader to take a permanent set from being so tightly set. So I finally had my leader knot break and needed to retie. This is what my Albright knot looks like with 6lb leader tied to PE 1.0 Varivas Dead or Alive. This is about as good as I can tie it. 3 Quote
Super User ChrisD46 Posted September 6, 2022 Super User Posted September 6, 2022 Seaguar Gold label is perhaps the best FC leader material available - but at a cost . Unless I was a tournament fisherman , I would use Berkley Big Game , Maxima Ultra Green , P-Line C-XX or Seaguar Red Lable FC line for mono , co-poly or FC leader material. 1 Quote
Drawdown Posted September 6, 2022 Posted September 6, 2022 I’ve done perfectly fine with Seaguar Red Label for my 8lb fluoro leader. Holds up well abrasion-wise from bottom structure. But not as good as I’d like if you’re passing your bait over exposed wood or hang up on the bank. Next time I buy, I’ll probably step it up a tiny notch (Blue Label or something). Not *that* much more expensive. But not until I finish this spool. Quote

Junk Fisherman Posted September 8, 2022 Posted September 8, 2022 Only fluoro to braid on my spinning gear. I fish very clear water and my catch rate would significantly decrease without using a fluoro leader. The best leader line I have found is 6 lb Gamma Edge. I'll use a Big Game leader if I am using topwater and the reel has braid. 15 lb fluoro leader if I am pitching or using the reel for reaction baits. If the water has color, I'll go straight braid for reaction baits like a chatterbait or spinnerbaits. 1 Quote
Super User Bird Posted September 8, 2022 Super User Posted September 8, 2022 With the gin clear water I fish here, flouro leader always when finesse fishing but never tested it's necessity. Non the less, 15# braid to 8# sunline Snyper using an Alberto knot. Quote
JackstrawIII Posted September 8, 2022 Posted September 8, 2022 Hey, I'm a fellow CNY/WNY fisherman. I fish braid/leader about 90% of the time and use various leaders, depending on the technique. It probably doesn't matter, but I do it anyways. If I want to help lightweight baits sink, I'll use FC (ned/neko, etc.). If I want a to keep the baits higher in the water or want more stretch, I'll use mono (wacky rigs, some texas rigs). If I don't really care, I'll use hybrid. Could probably just use hybrid for everything... but that's what I do. Quote
Motoboss Posted September 10, 2022 Posted September 10, 2022 About every combo is spooled with braid. With moving baits it’s straight braid. Slow moving dragging baits I use a short FC leader. Quote
waymont Posted September 10, 2022 Posted September 10, 2022 FC with everything except top water baits, then I will use mono. Quote
