Brown-outs, blown transformers and such would be the norm rather than the exception if the grid isn't modernized. I saw a thing on 60 minutes about this on Sunday. It was eye opening to say the least. There's no one single entity that has control or responsibility for the US power grid. So its basically just a nationewide patchwork of co-ops, electric companies, etc. The "grid" is also very prone to having an attack, whether that be by cyber, physical, or severe weather. Back in 2013, a physical attack on a substation in southern California almost took down all of silicon valley for weeks. The Dept of Energy has openly admitted that it would only take about 20 physical attacks on substations around the country to knock out the entire power grid here. Can you imagine the chaos if something like that were to happen? Yikes.
