I do have one Lews - but it's a Wally Marshall Signature...not a KVD.

I looked over the stats for the Lews-KVD rods and reels....nope...not what I'm looking for.

I went down the Quantum rabbit hole around 2004 or 2005 with the Energy PT reels, both spinning and baitcasting. It started off well so I immediately bought the Tour PT. I loved the finish and feel of these reels despite how heavy they were but within a year and several shipments to and from Quantum, they all started falling apart in different ways.  Quantum tried to fix/replace them and admitted they couldn't figure out why they were failing.  So after a deep breath and a sore ego, I threw them in the trash.

Fast forward to a few years ago, I was given a new Accurist (model prior to the S3) by a fisherman that thought it was fantastic and it too was a disappointment. I could never get it to work properly (braking, casting, drag, etc). I was able to exchange this one and the new one did the same thing.  I ended up giving the reel back to the person that gave it to me and he too had moved on from Quantum at that point.

My next adventure with Quantum came when I discovered Simmons Sporting Goods on Ebay. I picked up a Smoke S3, a Tour S3, the KVD Smoke and the Vapor. The Smoke S3 and Tour S3 have been great, no issues. The Vapor took two reels and many parts to get working right.  The frame and the side plates were not manufactured properly.  They did not fit, causing several issues but Quantum did eventually get me the correctly made parts and the reel now works great. I consider it one of the smoothest reels I have.  Then that brings me to the KVD Smoke. It only took one 5lb fish and this reel broke at the base of the frame. I have no words but.... How?

I don’t know that’s fair Tom.  VanDam has was put in a position because of his affiliation with Strike King.  When the investment group with SK acquired LEWS, the guy wasn’t exactly looking to rock the business boat.  Look at every SK Pro Staffer who now wears the Lews emblem.

Quantum had a heck of a run in 80-90 period.  I had a bunch.

BR site had a lots of Quantum fans that no longer posts threads about the reels since KVD moved to Lews. Prior to KVD changing  reel/rod sponsor to Lews BR had fewer Lew’s threads. The reels and rods are still the same, the fans have moved on.

just saying...

Not really. We've never had lot of Quantum fans. For some reason they seem to be producing fewer models. Kind of like Pflueger.

Back in the day i loved the pro 3 and the 1310. They ruled it for a while. Wish they would make the pro 3 again.

Me too.  I'm from Tulsa, and my aunt worked for zebco.  I was a Quantum man, and got a pro staff deal when I was 15.  I used pro 1c's a and pro 3c's paired with quantum tour edition rods.   Before that it was 1310's and had the 3.8 gear crankin' model as well.

My Icon PT landed a 110-pounder Araipama in this last easter.

My brother and I have 4 between us that we scoffed up on closeout a few years ago. Nothing but heavy duty use. They've held up great with zero glitches.

I'm really impressed how the drag washers performed flawlessly.

I asked a Quantum question 4 years ago. Aside from a scant few positive responses, crickets. I went ahead and grabbed a Tour S3 PT anyway which started my current production Quantum journey. I'm glad I did.

The Tour S3, Smoke S3, and KVD S3, which is essentially a Smoke S3, have been great reels. No weird sounds or glitches. They fish way above their price point right up against far more expensive reels. In comparison, the Curado K has nothing over them as far as actual casting performance is concerned, and is far touchier to dial in.

My Vapor PT is freakishly smooth with a super light spool. My buddy who has a pro bass boat full of high end Daiwa and Shimano tried one. He has 5 now. His son could've gotten any reel on the boat when he went away to college with no questions asked. His father is a multi-millionaire. His kid doesn't read forums. He chose the Vapors.

After I picked up the now discontinued Monster 300 PT a few years ago a bunch of the local swim bait guys followed and bought them too at blowout prices. No complaints from anyone, and I would know because I'm their go-to reel service guy.

None of this really matters though. People will think what they want to. It doesn't matter if A-Jay has a pile of them that work fine, or me or anyone else. The guy who bought a clamshell plastic Quantum 10 years ago and hated it will have the loudest voice. I'll just chalk it up to the luck of the Irish with my stuff. 8 Omen Blacks and 2 Defy Blacks that have never been broken over 5 years now, and no problems whatsoever with Quantum reels. It's weird, right?

I'll continue to fish mine right alongside my "better" stuff and barely notice that I'm fishing with junk. I guess the pigs I've caught on this gear deserves an asterisk though.

Agreed.  That's why I mentioned my experience/evolution.  It is natural.  I had similar run with Daiwa.  I bought and promptly snapped a $30 Daiwa rod and proceeded to write off anything Daiwa for a number of years. Dumb.

One thing about Quantum getting frequently bashed is that NIB reels are often available on ebay for $75-$100 under 'regular retail'.

I actually agree with this. I had 7' MH series 1 and for some reason that rod was just awesome. Never fished a better spinnerbait rod.

The one quantam reel I had was the one that I lost off my bass hunter.

I never could get it dialed in after a lot of effort anyway…

KVD sponsorship made the deal, not the reel itself.

My wife has an older Quantum Energy PT 20 on her St. Croix Avid Pearl because she liked the holographic finish on it. It's been a good reel for her but it's been used less in the 10 years she's owned it than most of mine get used in a season.

381 was a great reel.

Yes.  A-Jay says he is a retired coast guard guy, but that is untrue.  He is a retired bank robber who has put all his take into fishing stuff.  :-)

It's my fault. Kevin switched to Lew's after I told him I was fishing them. He's a T-Billy fanboy.

Really? People brought gear because of KVD signature thing?

Yes sir.  I talked a guy kayak fishing last weekend that said he would only buy Lews because of KVD. When I asked about Quantum, he was clueless.  KVD does have a fan base and his pull with them is strong.
