I've tried Quantum - very unimpressed.

Back in the day i loved the pro 3 and the 1310. They ruled it for a while. Wish they would make the pro 3 again.

I have some Quantum gear that has performed well for several years.

And with proper care, I expect that to continue.

However, there's nothing in any of the the current Quantum line of freshwater rods & reels,

that excites me.

I tried but the sound my tour s3 and smoke s3 made while casting was just too annoying. Smoke is back in the box in the basement gathering dust.

Quantum PT Smoke is (was?) an incredible reel.  I have many, and all have been awesome.  Nice thing about lack of chatter is that I have paid as little as $100 for them new.  I haven't tried all brands, but I'd be surprised if you can get a better reel for the $150-160 that these run.

The KVD version got the added benefit of being readily available when he switched, so those came with additional discount.

....Many, many years ago, in my BBF days (before bass fishing) I bought a Quantum spinning combo...I am not sure where...maybe at Walmart....probably AAFES?   Anyway, I probably spent most of $45 on that combo.  Reel started binding after about a dozen outings and rod registered next to zero on the standard sensitivity scale.  I did not even consider buying Quantum anything for a long, long time....and probably talked about what crap they made anytime the name came up.

I feel pretty foolish now.  Soooo glad I got past that because I love my Quantum reels.....even the Tour that sounds a bit whiny

Except that they are all paid for...

My first decent spinning  reel was a quantum, it never broke but the tolerances got so loose it was unbearable to fish with, line getting stuck between the line roller and the frame. The graphite was less ridged than rubber, they discontinued it and parts for it , so  I can't even repair it for old time sakes, I had a funeral for it and wrote some obituaries on the spool... it sits on my shelf

"You are not a quantum reel that failed" I said, "quantum failed you"

One of my all time favorite setups for river smallies had a Quantum Catalyst PTI matched up with one of my Avid ML rods. Well my fishing gear is well maintained. And I realize things can fail both unexpectedly and without warning. Well the anti reverse bearing went bad. Crap happens, new bearing I’ll be good as new. Well Quantum make the bearing obsolete and puts an end to an easy fix. Turned sour and I never look at Quantum again. Never will. First and last. Replaced it with a Shimano.

Still have it in case anyone needed it for parts.

I’m not gonna dis Quantum, I’m sure they put out good stuff, sure plenty of you guys use their stuff, I just won’t. Went over my situation with the factory. They were willing to give me credit to an upgraded reel. I opted for the Shimano. I have Shimano reels still working long before I bought that Quantum.

The only Quantum products I ever owned were a pistol grip 6' BC rod and a spinning reel. No, I wasn't using them together as a combo. ? The quality of both was suspect. I mean the rod functioned as is should. But the build, the guides and the epoxy were inconsistent. It looked like someone's first attempt at a custom rod build. The reel was one of those with the auto bail flip thing that broke. I took it off and kept using it. But it was forever out of balance. I was young and I fished with cheap stuff then. If I'm not mistaken, didn't Quantum start off in the late 80s-early 90s as a higher-end branch off the Zebco tree? I know they got better since then, but I never bought anything else from them, even when Bill was hawking them.

Quantum did start off as a Zebco higher end offering.

I had lots of Quantums over the years, really no complaints. My old Energy spinning reel was pretty great in its day.

There are a few (very few) on here that have used Quantum and like them.  At least very few willing to admit it.   :D   I have a few due to PhishLI's and A-Jay's (and a couple others) posted opinions of them.  I've only had the Tour S3 and an Icon 101HPT out once.  Not because I don't like them, but because (for some of us) life takes a turn for the worse as we get older.  I got a KVD Smoke S3 for $80 off normal price.  Nice looking reel that hasn't been out of the box but once to look at and spin the handle.

I picked up a 6'10" HF Tour Edition and SuperLite and a 7' MF Tour Edition for next to nothing when they got closed out.  Haven't used the SuperLite (no idea why I chose to try the Tour Edition over it...plus I seldom use a Heavy), but have to say I've enjoyed using both the Tour Edition rods.  Of course, these were the more expensive rods in Quantum's lineup.  Also have a Smoke Inshore 7' MF.  The only problem I have with the Inshore is the same one I have with my Fenwick Smallmouth rods.  Short handles.  I prefer 2-handed casts.  Both are excellent rods, so I make the necessary adaptations.

Was impressed how light the Quantum Escalades felt when I picked one up in store (available DSG only).  So when I decided to gift a brother and his wife baitcasting setups, the Escalade is one I picked up.  Naturally I had to take the combo out once to try.  Wound up going back to DSG and picked up another for myself.  Closeouts (again).  $50 for $100 rod.

My old Quantum Iron round reels are great catfish reels. Absolute tanks, I expect they'll outlive me. I bought one of the Energy PT baitcasters when they first came out. Maybe the longest casting reel I ever owned, but it got geary within a year. Haven't bought a Quantum since. I don't hate on 'em, I just haven't felt compelled to buy another.

I did a quick Google. The parent company of Lew's and Strike King acquired Zebco/Quantum in 2021. So they are still two companies in one.

I use mostly spinning reels and have used Quantum’s almost exclusively for 30 years. Each new offering has been very reliable. I keep buying them because they never give me any grief. They quietly do their job year after year.

20 years ago they made some of the better reels on the market. The PT series were always rock solid and treated me well. The ACS brake system was very good for the time period.

Currently I have an Icon baitcaster and S3 KVD spinning reel but use neither enough to have a bold opinion. Both do what I ask when needed though.

I have a Qauntum tour grade casting reel that's excellent.

I have two Quantum Smoke S3 PT Inshore spinning reels that I bought to be matchy-matchy with a couple of SLX rods I got for a steal, before Shimano came out with the Nexave. I got a fair discount on the reels, $125 each versus the ~200 retail so figured I'd give them a shot. I like them well enough, they are reasonably smooth and have fairly nice drag. I would put them a slight step below my Daiwa BGs. I think they are fine for the price I paid, but do not see the value at their retail price.

I've had a few quantum reels and a couple rods.  About the only one that gets used regularly anymore is the Quantum Smoke rod.  Like was mentioned above, over time the reels just loosen up.

Here’s my contribution ?. My first foray back into fishing specifically for bass was a quantum heat spinning combo I purchased at the old sporting show at the Rosemont convention center ?too many years ago to remember.  It was a lower/middle of the road combo but it wasn’t half bad for the money I spent to purchase it which I believe was under$50.00?.  The combo in the photos I actually won on a raffle ticket at the Tinley Park fishing show way too many years gone by for me to remember, I just took it out to take said photos and I will say that reel is built like a tank, my plan was/is to use it as a catfish combo. Although I’ve replaced most of my reels from my re entry into fishing this is one that is going to stick around for quite awhile just based on how solid it is built.

I tried one Quantum bait casting reel once many years ago, I believe it lasted maybe 6 months. After that I've only used Daiwa & Shimano, so Quantum left a bad taste in my mouth. :MSN-Emoticon-sick-146:
