My photos are the worst! The WORST! And the bigger the fish, the worse the photo, for whatever reason. So, I'm thinking of doing what I hate and adding some equipment to my little canoe, i.e. a GoPro and a clamp to attach it to thwart. Then I can voice activate it and actually get a photo of a bass AND me, instead of a fuzzy bass lying on the bottom of my cluttered canoe.

21st century, here I come!

However, I will never all YouTubey and have drones hovering over me. A drone would be like paving paradise.

Its hard to take photos solo mission, unless you have a nice souped up Go Pro setup like @A-Jay.  The rest of us either need to do what you do and lay it on a board, or take a selfie (which are the worst IMO).  I do agree that your photos are kind of fuzzy sometimes but it takes some time to get a steady hand, and it might be even tougher in a canoe.

My photos look great on my phone but always look fuzzy once uploaded to bassresource. I think it’s because It forces me to resize them. Anyhoo, that has nothing to do with your topic.

I just prop my phone up on a seat or against the console and set a timer, take a few steps back with the fish and away she goes.

You can always get a phone holder and mount it on your canoe or kayak and do the same fairly easily without resorting to shelling out money for a go-pro.

I'm an old woman in a solo canoe, so there is no seat other than mine. I will consider using my phone, but I do like to fish in the rain and it's not waterproof.

Yep, Gimruis, my photos are the worst.

You can fix this and it's not nearly as complicated as you might imagine.

GoPro & Scotty both make useful accessories and there's even a GoPro remote control which is helpful if you mount your camera out of reach.  Don't recommend voice control as you'll have the unit going on & off randomly and at what seems like the worst times.

There's even a GoPro App which will connect to your camera, offers all the controls as the remote and will even allow you to see 'what your camera is seeing'.  Very helpful.

You can take pics with these cameras or capture them out of the video;

which is what I do most often.

I have a couple of units set up in my Old Town Canoe and after a little trial & error,

they get the job done for me.

Even the budget cameras have these options.

My Dragon Touch Vision 3 and 4 have remotes for start/stop the video or take single frame photos. They also have an app that lets my phone or tablet control the cameras and see what they're seeing.

I use one of my Vision 3 cameras on a backpack-clip mount clipped to the topper window and running through my Tablet as my backup camera when launching/landing the F-9.

My video edit software on the PC is NCH Video Pad and I view the 'finished' product with VideoLan VLC Media Player - which has a hotkey to 'snap' frames to JPG files.

Thanks for the remote tip, AJ. I'll buy one of those too.

I'm willing to pay more to buy a superior camera. I've used my current camera for 30 years. I figure I'll use the GoPro for the rest of my life.

30 year old camera?  That's probably the issue.  Most modern cameras will have image stabilization to reduce camera shake.  That's probably what you're experiencing now, as that wasn't a common option when digital cameras first came out.  There are a ton of waterproof digital cameras you can buy now for around $100 that will do just fine for what you need.

I wouldn't say that.  Some of the selfies in the recent catch photo thread are downright terrible.  I hate it when people post them sideways too.

I am in an ongoing work fishing contest and a requirement to submit a fish entry is to take a photo of the fish's length.  Makes it a whole lot easier with a hawg trough like you have.  But when I need to take a length of a muskie, then it becomes extremely difficult by myself.  The photos need to clearly show the fish's length so blurriness won't be tolerated when I do it.

My selfies come out clear enough, but I have to remember to smile. It looks like I'm recording a hostage video.

I use a small tripod for my phone that I got on Amazon, and have it set up ready to go on my boat at all times with the camera timer set to 3 seconds. With a waterproof case for the phone, it’s a really simple way to get decent photos when fishing by yourself.

I want a system that keeps the fish out of water for as short a time as possible. So, a mounted camera with a remote strikes me as the best solution. High quality photos will get me through the coming winter. Yeah, Maine has a lot of fish, but the price we pay is coming and I need bass in focus to remind me why I endure the long, white winter! ?

A GoPro screenshot is my best option.

but I’m usually way to lazy.

My photos got much better after picking up one of those little phone tripods.

Edit to add: @ol'crickety you've been a breath of fresh air around here. I've been enjoying your posts and fishing reports. Looking forward to your upgraded photos.

Any and all that show a hook buried past the barb in human skin.

I recognize it's not what your asking....but if I never see another one of those, I'll be happy

I just picked up today a universal camera/cell phone clamp I can attach to my windshield. Maybe I can get a chance to play with it Thursday and Friday. I don’t own a Go-Pro. I’d like to get a couple short movies with my grandsons. Handicam should work.

GoPros are also fun for other things. Once you have one you may find many uses for it. And you may want video of your trips too.

I don't go with cheaper brands because (I've used a few):

- GoPro have the best stabilization I've ever seen.

- They have true 4K (some cheap brands fake it but don't advertise that fact)

- oh, 4K at 60 FPS btw. Most of the cheapies don't do that.

- Provides a good picture and they have a good quality photo sensor.

- They are durable.

I bought my last 2 GoPros used, much cheaper that way.

If you just want photos than I would MAYBE look into a better camera than a GoPro. This just depends on how fussy you are. They do fine for most people, but if I wanted to print and frame shots I personally would get something better, which I have done.

Since you are using a 30 year old camera though I think GoPro would be a great step up and you may never need anything else!

About my newer camera, I did buy something for "B-roll" footage. You know, zooming into birds or whatever and putting that in the video somewhere. I hate not having a zoom lens. Great for hiking too.

It's a Panasonic Lumix DC FX80. Has a 60x optical zoom lens. Let's me get shots I could only dream of before.

Both of these shots were from a good distance away. Video looks great too. Camera cost less than a used GoPro (I also bought this one used at BH Photo)

I didn't even know these turtles had this much color until I zoomed in.

This bird never moved the whole time. He's focused on something.

i read that the red slashes on the side of the heads (visible on mr turtle to the right) means they were pets. in any event, the california native turtle (i have no idea what the scientific name is) is pretty drab by comparison.....
