Hey ya’ll,

If you had to guess, what percentage of your bass that you catch…. We’ll go with in recent times…. Are caught in each of these three categories? What percentage off topwater, what percentage somewhere in the middle of water column, what percentage off bottom? And if you had to guess, what does your time allocation in each of these three zones look like in comparison to one another e.g how long do you spend fishing topwater in comparison to bottom/midcolumn?

It’s seasonal for me

Mid summer I’d say about 20% on top,

40% mid column and 40% on the bottom.

Time spent for each is in direct correlation  to success rate.

Depends on the water depth.  Fish caught in 6 feet or less, most were caught on surface, or middle of the water Column.  Deeper than 6 feet, almost all caught, on the bottom.

Baits I have had success mid column are, spinnerbaits, chatter baits, jerk baits, lipless crankbaits,  shallow running crankbaits, underspin's, A rig, and swimbaits.

I'll say 60% bottom, 20%, middle, and 20% top water.

This can change with cooler weather coming up.

I'm going to say that regardless of what type of bait I'm throwing and where it may run or be in the water column, the fish I'm targeting are almost always relating to 'the bottom' (insert structure) in some way.  Cover can & does offer the bass security & feeding opportunities,

but I am of the belief that it's the structure that puts them there in the first place.

Suspend bass holding in 20 ft let's say over 50 ft, might as well be on Mars.

Because I'm not catching them.

I dont catch too many mid column .   Most my spinnerbait fish are near the top . I'll guess 30 top 10 mid 60 bottom ..

It’s all relative.  Like @A-Jay said, most of the time the catchable bass are going to be related to cover/structure.  If I told you I caught all my fish at 7 feet in 15 feet of water, does that mean I need to fish mid column?  What if I added that there was weed growth or brush tops that topped out at 7 feet.  Most of the time for me, mid column without something for the bass to relate to is called dead water.

The last year I’ve found myself fishing mid column more. I love to drag baits but When I’m fishing from the bank a jerkbait, small swimbait, small chatterbait/spinnerbait is a better choice. It’s just such a good way to cover water and even more importantly spend more time fishing and less time breaking off and tying on new lures. The lakes I’ve been fishing this year will eat a t rig or jig very quickly.

Fish that were caught-5% topwater 10% mid 85% bottom . Time spent for each is 33.3 %.

How does one catch minus 5% on topwater?...
