Say you have a lot of 1.5 square bills but you found something you like better how do you switch it up in your arsenal do you put what you have up and buy as much as you need in the new one you like or do you buy one and use up your old ones type of thing.

more of discussion on how you transfer over to a bait you like better, after buying a decent amount of the other bait you had before

I don't sell baits I own, "I like better" is usually only perceived, and even when it's a real thing, it's temporary. I like it when others do it though, cause I can get some back stock on the cheap at fishing shows and flea markets.

I use both too…

I know this may sound dumb…but, I use some baits according to risk factors. Example… I‘ll fish a cheap off brand lipless crank bait around stumps and trees and other crap were it’s a high risk factor of losing them.
I fish my name brand rattle traps out in the open water where it’s less likely to loss them.
This is probably NOT the best method, as you don’t use the better baits we’re the fish are more likely to be.

At this rate I would just never buy name brand baits.

I know….Right.
Like I said it probably not the best method… but I do have brand names I’ve had for years. LOL

Silly...

Fish 'em like you stole 'em. I intend to lose every lure I have ever bought.

That was my Dad’s methodology too.

” I bought this bait to catch fish with it or, lose it, trying to catch fish with it.”

I make them sit on the bench, tell them how important they are to the team, and promise them I will put them in the game when the time is right.  After a year or two on the bench, I make them stay home, but promise to give them a chance to be a hero again some day when the water level is right.  I never sell or trade them.  Once drafted on to my team, they are with me for life.  A few make the hall of fame, and spend their retirement reminding me of the glory days, but most simply end up fading away.

I recently did well in the draft at tackle warehouse, and am planning on winning a championship with the new team soon.

Personally i don't think it sounds dumb AT ALL. I do the same in regards to risk factor of losing lures. I love buying lures but if there is an unusually high risk of losing I will throw a Rapala instead of a Lucky Craft ?‍♂️

That's what I do.  I hate losing a favorite lure, because it always seems like when you replace it with a brand new, supposedly identical one, they never produce as well as the one you lost.

I have boxes full of LuckyCraft and Japanese hardbaits, they almost never get used.   Same goes with a number of $25-50 swimbaits.

I hate losing a tungsten weight, losing a $20 CB could end up souring a fishing trip as petty as that sounds.

As long as I can catch fish of Rapala, and other mid range priced baits, I'll continue to use the high dollar baits on a very limited basis.

I used to whitewater kayak, and the best kayakers would go multiple trips, months without ever having to pop their skirt and go swimming.     I view fishing the same way, a really good fisherman shouldn't be losing many baits.

Don't buy them if you are not going to fish them.

Going through this now. Theres really only one body of water I fish and after extensive fishing ive narrowed down my worm colors to black, black red flake, and pink. I have about a dozen bags of other colors which I will be giving away to a HS fishing club. If i fished different/new lakes I would probably hold on to more stuff but since I dont and ive narrowed my preferences down I just give away what I dont intend on using.

At some point over time, after you purchase hard baits you “like better” your inventory will become redundant.  Then comes the what do I tie on question.  I have that very issue.  Now to liquidate baits that sit and never see water.

I think everyone has done that to some extent.  I don't do it as much as I did when I was younger.  For the most part Ive either found a replacement, customized the hardware to reduce loss or all together phased the bait out.

I fish stump fields during the coldest part of winter and the lipless bite is usually there.  The TN60s get bit consistently where some of the other traps I've tried don't.  After trying to find a replacement with limited success.  Eventually I just started putting light wire hooks on the TNs and using a heavier rod.  In Jan and Feb the fish are cold enough that they don't fight hard enough to bend the hooks out, but if I snag up I can crank the drag down and more times than not get my bait back with a bent hook.

But they look too good NOT to be in my arsenal that may come into play years later!

Well, Guilty As Charged.

95% of my "collection" has never been fished.

If I'm transferring over to a bait I like better, I use the old bait(s) in the most dangerous places. 1. Because I'm more comfortable losing them. 2. Because in the most dangerous places the bass aren't going to be as picky as the angler.

Your loyalty should be rewarded.   But the reality is that you might draft a young international player, pay him a healthy advance at the top end of the rookie scale and have him walk out on the club during the first practice.

That is exactly why I haven't let the Monkey talk me into buying any expensive glide baits.

A couple years ago I was big into craws, and bought a lot. The year before that it may have been toads. I don’t fish either very much lately, but I’ve been doing this long enough to know that there’s a good chance I will again. I’m not going to get rid of the ones I bought at a loss and then pay even higher prices to replace them in the future.

Fish with what makes you happy at the moment. Don’t fret over the stuff you bought before.
