I manage it by not making my work or career my top priority. Took me many years to realize, but I see no gain at slaving away all my best years so that I can die in comfort.

I'm not a big consumer, I am happy with a cheaper phone for instance. I love to hike and fish and be outdoors - I am just now figuring out how I really want to live. The rat race has no part in the rest of my short existence here. But that's just me.

@Bluebasser86, Short 55, that's more officers than we had total in the Sheriff's Dept I worked for! I probably should call some of the guys to see how they're all doing. When I retired and left, made a clean break. I went back one time.

We all have chapters in our lives. Some we have control over and some we do not.

Life changes..yup.  no more constant statement ever.

in the beginning of work.  work dominates.  it should.  you have the smallest earning potential..and you can get fired Probie!!!  eyes open, mouth shut..get the work done!

as you gain seniority the scale slides.  you have more $$ (if youre doing it right) and more available time.

at the end, you should have all the $$ and free time, and unfortuanately, no more energy.  life changes.

I can’t get rid of either.

They love me so much they won’t leave… I hope the grandkids don’t have kids  anytime soon or we won’t even break even anymore…

I get the guilt trip every time I have to drop him off at home. Papa, can you stay for a little while and play with me?

Papa don't have that energy. Kid ran around, yes, ran around the 14 footer for 5 hours last weekend. Told him if he fell in, I'm leaving him and his momma can get another kid to replace him, without ants in his pants. We were done fishing. I pulled up to the dock. He gets out and wants to walk in the water. I told him "Don't walk on the ramp, you're going to fall". Ramp was covered in slime. He falls. Get's up and falls again. Kid is soaked head to toe. I go get the truck and load the boat. He tells me to put the heat on so he can dry. It's 90* outside...

I love him so much I would steal him away from his momma. I say that jokingly...or not. Grandma yells at me because I let him suffer the consequences of his actions. It's the only way he will grow up.

The two that live with me are 20 and 17. They are quiet and no trouble  for the most part. Just sloppy…I made it a point to spend a lot of time with them when they were growing up. Ive had them since they were 11 and 8. Mom and dad got it together, and now they live with us and their kids. Hopefully, they’ll get it together a little more and get their own place soon….

Time is a resource and it should be treated as such.
You only have so much if it.

Set priorities and do what you have to do, what you want to do will come..In time

I work a standard 40 hour week, and these days I am a hard stop at quitting time. I know a lot of my coworkers are working from home until 9, 10, or 11 PM.  Most of them are online working sometime during the weekend. I refuse to do that, it's not healthy. Sometime during the weekend I will get out and go fishing.

I love my job. One perk is that I’m not on a clock. Pay is all commission, except for paid time off, and the rare seminars I’m paid for going to.

I usually carry a combo in the work car trunk. When I’m slow enough, I fish ponds between stops.

I wish you the best in your new career!

I posted this a long while ago, but I just wanted to thank everyone for their replies. I've been in the field for a little bit now, and now am fishing a lot more than I was the last couple years.
