Looking for a Dobyns A-Rig rod. i’ve heard reports the 804 champ xp is a good rod but it’s only rated to 1 1/2 oz.  I have to imagine that an average sized A-rig rod would be at least 3 oz.  Anyone have any good rods to recommend

i prefer Dobyns rods for this use but open to other suggestions

Not a Dobyns, but a Irod. Bama heavy, rated 1 to 4 ozs. I have 4 of Irods, and very happy with them, they get great reviews, and customer service is awesome. Even though the Gneiss III is priced at $ 149.99, they fish at a much higher price point. Here's a link to see it.

The falcon amistad is a good a-rig rod. Rated to 2 oz in the expert line. For me, that’s a medium rig with 4 small keitech (3.3) plus one bigger one in the middle (3.8 for me). I put 1/8 ounce heads on the bottom 2 and middle. The top two were just hooks. It comes in around 2.5-3 oz all in, but the rod can handle it just fine and cast it more than far enough.

Any heavy power jig rod or flippin' stick will work. Here in Missouri we can have 3 hooks ,so 3 1/8 oz. heads and 2 hitch hikers plus the swimbaits is not all that heavy.

It's a winter time /prespawn  suspended fish deal around here so maybe 3 months or so before I put it away.

Personally, I use a old Daiwa light and tough flippin' stick and 50 lb. braid.

795 or 796. Can’t go wrong with either.

Wow.  796 with 2-8 oz rating.  That's a big stick.  Definitely getting well into saltwater territory there.

Yeah I use 795 but 3 oz on a 796 would be fine. Those champions are light and thin.

I have the irod a-rig rod and I really like it. It doesn't fish at the upper end of its weight range though - mid-sized and small a-rigs with 3.8's are a great fit. But a 6.5inch arm, 8 blade, with 1-3 1/4oz heads and the rest at 1/8 will overload it, at least to me. But I'll actually bomb cast an a-rig sometimes and that's where it starts to overload; so its fine with lob casts on the bigger ones.

Point being, it's worth calling Dobyn's and telling them what you are actually going fish on it, as it may make a difference on whether you get a 5 or a 6 in their line.
