I keep seeing people recommend 10# and even 12# mono.

 

I'm with Tom ( @WRB ) that you shouldn't go above .010" diameter line on most bass reels - once you hit 3000 or 4000 size that's debatable.

 

Those 10#+ lines are over .010" - most 8# is right on the line.

 

So if you go with mono, hybrid or FC on anything less than a 3000 size reel - keep it to something that's .010" diameter or less...that's gonna mean 8# in most cases, 6# for others.

Planning on running a Pflueger Supreme 3000. Think I'll plan on ordering some options, try em out before I go. Need to get a feel for the new travel rod, anyway.

Pflueger's sizes aren't standard

 

A Pflueger 30 is NOT a 3000 size...it's a 2500 size.

Yes, I run Pfluegers and I have a Supreme 30 in my arsenal.

All my spinning reels are Pflueger. Mix of president and supreme. Think I should snag a different unit for this purpose?

Long as you don't 'abuse' them...they're fine

 

Use the lighter line if mono/hybrid/FC...but braid is a good alternative

 

My bass spinning arsenal is

President 25 on a ML/F - 10# Sufix 832 to 6# InvizX leader - general finesse fishing

President XT-30 on a ML/MF - 4#YZH - light cranks/jerks, secondary finesse

President XT-30 on a M/F - 8# InvizX - weightless plastics, heavier Shaky/Neko, wieghted wacky

Supreme 30 on a MH/F - 20# Sufx 832 - skipping duty as I can't skip with a BC to save my life

 

I've got a couple Mitchells and a Lews for crappie duty....

Leaders simply aren't necessary for bass fishing.

 

I've fished all over the country...muddy water, stained water, gin clear water, etc.

 

Bass don't care about braided line unless you're using 65lb braid that's as thick as a rope.

 

At reasonable diameters, there's no reason for a leader.  I run 20lb 8-strand Hercules braid without leaders, and never have a problem catching lots of fish

personally i would use 20lb braid because with a leader i can use whatever line i want via leader.

 

if you dont want to fumble with leaders, 10lb mono is my next choice.

 

if you fish for smallies which can be line shy i would say 8lb flouro.

Open to any options. I'll be tossing everything from 1/4oz jigs, spinners, some soft plastics, up to 1/2oz spinners, spoons, some top water. Here's the kicker: targeting everything from trout and perch to pike. Already have some steel leader.

 

I would use 8-12 pound test Berkley Big Game mono or 10 pound test Powerpro braid with a mono leader. Use a wire leader when needed.

This year since the early 1990,s i finally switched to 832 from spiderwire.

I only did this for a test to understand what all the hype is about 832. Well i will be sticking with 832 because it doesnt fray as bad as spiderwire and casts better.

Eagle claw mono is also good stuff.

 

It's not tempered mono like big game, but it performs very well.

20lb clear fluorescent big game was my go-to catfishing mono since I was a kid.  Then, my dad put the 6lb on my old hunter green Johnson spincast reel for bluegills. 

 

I thought it was a high class rig back when I was 7 or 8 years old lol!

On my spinning rig, size 2500 reel, never went over 8lb test, using mono.

 

Baitcaster, if I had one choice, it would be 12 lb mono. Used these test's for years with out any really bad issues.
