Good evening all!  I was looking for some help in selecting one of these rods for spinning.  I  would like input on which one is the most versatile.  All help is greatly appreciated!

You're going to have to be a lot more specific. Start with models you are considering or at least techniques you want to use the rod for.

I have an Expride and an Adrena now and have owned Loomis rods in the past, all 3 make excellent models that are versatile.

Thanks for your response.  I'm new to spinning rods and have baitcasters only.  I went to my tackle store and they had the 853, 842, and 802 in the GLX model.  They had the 6'11 MH, 6'10 Medium, 7' Medium, 6'7 Medium Light, and 7'6 Medium Light in the Adrena.  They had 7'Light, 7'2 Medium Light, and 7'2 Medium Light.

As for what I want to throw, I'm thinking small swimbaits, small crankbaits, maybe try ned rigs, smaller spinner baits, creature baits, and worms.  Not sure if that is too broad but just some thoughts.

Again, thanks for your assistance!

I don't use spinning rods so I can't really help you but hopefully with that information you will get some good advice. Good luck!

I will say that the JDM style rods, Expride and Adrena, tend to have actions that lend themselves to a wide range of techniques, in my experience.

These are all winners in my book

  • GLX 842S - love this model
  • Expride  light plus, ML, I bet M is nice too
  • Adrena 6-11 MH is nice. Locking nut loosens easily. Medium may be a better option for power.

I have never used the GLX 842s (I have an NRX 852) but I do know people love it.  I have purchased numerous G Loomis rods (new and used) from this company and they have a used one they say is in excellent condition.  They are a G Loomis dealer and in my experience, if they say excellent condition, you won’t be able to tell it’s ever been used.  They have free shipping and if you sign up for their newsletter, you can get an additional 10% off.

They will also auction their used rods on their eBay site if they need to make room for new rods.  If you go to their eBay site and look at completed auctions for the GLX 842s, it looks like the sell price for a pre owned excellent GLXs has ranged from $280 - $305 plus an $18.00 shipping charge (they charge shipping on used).  I don’t think they have the rods linked for auction now but assume they will if it doesn’t move.  If it were me, I would call them and ask if the rods (they have 2) will go to auction if not sold.  Knowing the highest recent auction sale was $305 + $18 shipping ($323 total), I would offer $350 including shipping and see if they will take it.  If I were a gambling man, I would bet they will.  If not, it’s still a fair price.

The Shimano PA 267ML coupled with a smaller Vanford reel (e.g., 2000 form factor) would make a great, very light, finesse rig.

QED I went with that line-up last weekend.  Got a pretty sweet deal.  No regrets as I have two other Adrenas and love them.  Good to see another cyclist on here!
