I do.

Used it exactly one time.

Loaded it up and took it to Mexico.

2013 I think.

Flew commercial airlines here and in Mexico. Works fine but logistically it was a Total nightmare.  Baggage handlers were freaking out.  Almost wouldn't put it on the first flight.  Said it was too big.  Cost way too much, oversize fee.

Customs was worse.

You can have it, and I'll even pay half the shipping.

I was just typing a PM to you since I know you go to Mexico. I had a feeling it might be more trouble than it was worth. I appreciate the offer! I'll let you know if I want to take you up on that.

Do you just use Loomis Escape travel rods instead?

i am eyeballing the Megabass offering hard.  same magnitude of $$.  i have a rod tube.  the Bazooka tube i think.  carrying that thing thru a busy airport is a good time.  hahah..

we once strapped it to a pack mule, but that is an entirely different horror story.

Yes, Escapses are nice sticks.

I do/did use travel rod and with a very high level of success. Made my own travel rod tube.  Took them as carry on, put them in the over head or the flight attendant would take it and "hold on to it" for me.

Either way my gear always made it intact, something that was not a given any other way.

Finally since we are frequent lodge guests, they let us leave our gear at the lodge, locked up.

And have it ready for us when we arrive.  Super convenient.

I went on a plane 3 times with a Bazooka tube and didn't have any issues until the trip home the 3rd trip. They took the C clip out that holds the tube extended out and kept it I guess. Thankfully my rods were rigid enough that they supported the tube and didn't break or take any major damage.

It does what it is supposed to do. I too have taken mine to Mexico but every airline might have varying rules and it can even depend on who is handling it on the Mexican and US side. I’ve never had issues as AJay described to and from Mexico.

This was also well before the time when airlines realized they could charge folks more money for larger items or items exceeding weight limits.

I have 2 of the Escape Series spinning rods (7 foot M and 6'9 MH) and they come with their own indestructible rod tube and rod bag.

the great thing about the Escapes is that the rod tube will fit inside the largest size suitcase on the diagonal.

so you don't have to carry them separately. The only issue with that is the rare chance they lose your luggage.

However I think the Escape series might be discontinued but you can probably find them online like from AL.  They are pricey but very good.

that was actually a different thread.

What he's asking about now is the suitcase-on-wheels for a traveling cache of 1-pc rods.

(also good for 2-pc surf rods)

I appreciate all the advice!

Seems that lugging this giant case is probably more hassle then I need at this point in my life.

I'll just stick with the 3 piece travel rod.

Thanks!
