Tatulatard Posted August 16, 2022 Posted August 16, 2022 It's like buying a vehicle and not knowing the number or cylinders or what wheels are driven. I don't expect anyone to read instructions unless they genuinely can't figure it out how how to work the reel but you should know if your reel is centrifugal, magnetic or dual brake. You should know this before you bought it. Of all the information on the reel the braking system is most important. I just looked up this reel. It has the abu swing arm brake. These are always on and free to swing. You can't lock them on or off unless they changed that? 1 Quote
Super User Catt Posted August 16, 2022 Super User Posted August 16, 2022 ^^This^^ ? The first thing I do is take the reel apart & make sure everything is properly lubricated. I may even clean it, degrease it, & relube it. I do this regardless of whose name is on the side. Quote

I think what you meant to say is that YOU personally like to know what kind of brakes are on a reel before you buy It. I’ve never cared at all until this reel, and guess what…I figured It out. I guarantee you the overwhelming majority of regular ole fisherman don’t care about that sort of thing either. They buy a reel and fish. And those brakes were 100% locked in place on my reel. I had to physically pop them out for them to free swing. 17 minutes ago, Catt said: ^^This^^ ? The first thing I do is take the reel apart & make sure everything is properly lubricated. I think some of you need to understand that some people are mechanically minded. They understand machines, like to work on their own stuff be It vehicles, reels, etc., and like to take things apart and tinker. Others, like me, are not and are totally fine buying something and never worrying about the hows and whys of It. I just sent a bag of pieces of a reel to bulldog on this forum because once I took It apart, I was like what have I done, and couldn’t get It back together. That’s just the way some people are. On the flip side, I have my strengths that most of you don’t. Any way, that’s all I’ll say. Some of you have taken a joke post and turned In to telling me how I should act with my own stuff that I paid my money for. 1 Quote

The little lip at the end on the brake locks under the little lip on the spool. Quote

In fact, it looks like four of them are locked in place but whoever did it for the picture doesn't fish with them. They picked two next to each other to 'unlock' (the two nearest the viewer in the picture) and locked 4 next to each other. That's a recipe for some unbalanced wobble on this reel. 1 hour ago, Tatulatard said: I just looked up this reel. It has the abu swing arm brake. These are always on and free to swing. You can't lock them on or off unless they changed that? the original IVCB system (IVCB4) you cannot lock and unlock. They are permanently 'on'. The Ike, STX gen 4, and maybe one more have that system, but in the new Xenons they have reverted to the IVCB4 or the Infini brake for some reason. Quote

Like I said earlier, in my last post in this thread was one of the extremely rare times I didn’t read the instructions first. ? 1 Quote

If you don't chose a reel based on a preferred braking system then what do you look at when picking out a reel? Quote
Cbump Posted August 16, 2022 Author Posted August 16, 2022 Forum reviews, gear ratio I want, line capacity for the technique I plan to use, and what looks good to me. Because life is too short to use ugly equipment. I have 10 friends I regularly fish buddy tournaments. I promise not one of them chooses a reel based on preferred braking system lol. It’s like on hunting forums. You always have the gear heads that act like you have to know ffp vs sfp, bullet velocity, spend hours calculating bullet drop on range, etc. when in reality, the vast majority of shooters buy a 30-06 or 270 and a regular 3-9 scope, sight It in 1” high at a hundred, and go hunt. Super User dodgeguy Posted August 16, 2022 Super User Posted August 16, 2022 Braking system is probably the most important feature of a reel. 1 Quote

ironbjorn Posted August 16, 2022 Posted August 16, 2022 I definitely think you should know if your reel has internal brakes or not because that's really vital if you want it to function. I don't get fancy with it either OP, but there's a middle ground in which you should know how the reel sets up but where you also don't get caught up on the fancy manufacturer-speak. Quote
ironbjorn Posted August 16, 2022 Posted August 16, 2022 Would you buy a car you have no idea how to put into drive? Would "I'm not a car guy" be an excuse for such a thing? Most people aren't "car guys (or gals)" but you still need to know how to operate it. Quote

Considering your latest truck purchase reading and understanding all the info available took a few days, I imagine. Heck, just the infotainment system alone with all the HVAC integrations takes a rocket surgeon to completely grasp all the options to get the most out of them. Well done. You should probably go back to the selling dealer and educate your sales person, as I'm sure their walk through presentation was lackluster at best.... 5 minutes ago, Darth-Baiter said: you guys are piling on, huh? Well, he IS on a bass fishing forum in the reel section, for crying out loud, stating he doesn't know his reel functions. Did you really expect everyone to gather around, hold hands, and sing Kumbaya to reaffirm his dereliction of duty to his fishing gear?? I think not!! 3 Quote

I was once studying for some college class while sitting at my parent restaurant. a big body builder dude showed up and just ordered steamed broccoli and white rice. I commented that was a super light meal. he looked me up and down, and said sarcastically, "well some of us care what we look like". I looked at him and then at my textbooks, and replied, "well, do you know what is the inverse of Sin(x)?" he stood there looking lost..I said, "well, those aren't the only parts of the body that you need to exercise". his girlfriend GUFFAWED.. hahah. we all come from different places. me, I am a natural tinkerer but I just get the reels to work perfectly for me and dont sweat the minutia. 1 Quote

But, you gotta admit in order for the reels to work perfectly you gotta have a grasp on the functions, including all brake options..... That's the main point to this whole topic. Besides, my statement was made with tongue firmly in cheek. It's all in good fun. One can't put himself out there with a thread title like this without expecting some constructive criticism and ribbing. Quote

I didn’t say I don’t know how to press the button on the reel, which may be comparable. I know how to drive a car, but I don’t know how to tune It if it’s not driving right.
