Super User NYWayfarer Posted August 13, 2022 Super User Posted August 13, 2022 Meet Iggy. A 5 month old hound mix we adopted from our local shelter. My son always wanted a dog and he is responsible enough between work and school to handle her. 24 Quote

Super User MN Fisher Posted August 13, 2022 Super User Posted August 13, 2022 That's a handsome fella there, and I'm sure he's gonna be well loved. Two of ours came from the shelter, Sara the lab/aussie shepherd cross and Tawnie the cockapoo. 3 Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted August 13, 2022 Author Super User Posted August 13, 2022 Thanks everyone! I have been missing having a dog for awhile. My remote days and my wife and sons schedule make it possible for us to have her. I knew if I got another dog it would be a shelter pet. We are as happy to have Iggy is she is to have a forever home. bonus is she only needs one shot and she is almost fully house trained. She got mega treats for going outside yesterday and today. 4 Quote

I did that with my dog and now he asks to go outdoors, runs out the door, looks around, and then runs back in and demands a treat for "going outside." Congrats on the new dog. Mine is a shelter dog as well who was given up TWICE. Once he realized he wasn't going to be abandoned again he settled right in and now he's a "velcro dog" most of the time - he likes to be near me. We've had him for 10 years now. 2 Quote
Global Moderator 12poundbass Posted August 20, 2022 Global Moderator Posted August 20, 2022 We’ve never rescued dogs from shelters per sey but we’ve reduced dogs from undesirable homes. Hank which has been a frequent fliers on here, we found him a few times on the loose and took him to the local vet, after four times they said “ we know who he belongs to and it you can find a good home for him we highly recommend it”. Well 6 years later here he is. Lola our pug, we saw a Facebook post looking to rehome her. When we got there we knocked on the door we heard a dog fight! We instantly thought she was being Attacked! Little did we know it was her that was being aggressive which is unheard of from a Pug! So we thought she was being abused. Little did we know she was the one starting the fights and was very aggressive. She started the fights, and was very aggressive! She still starts fights but has gotten better and now that all we have left is a 140lb dog we sometimes laugh. Long story short, had we not found her, she could’ve been bounced from house to house, or easily been put down! Thank god Hank is 140lbs and east going, because she intimidates him like no other! 1 Quote

First dog I had was a Pug named Dino (After the Flintstones “dog”) super friendly and non-aggressive unless you took away his bone or hurt one of his family. He jumped up and bit my cousin when we had a fight. Update on Iggy. She is doing great. She is now house trained. I taught her how to sit, we are working on stay. She fetches and brings back anything I throw. She had her last shot so we can go on walks. She is curious about her new area as we ventured around the neighborhood. I plan on loose leash training her next. The vet said she is more Lab than anything else. Her only flaw would be puppy bites. Two or three times a day she will want our attention so much she will mouth us. It’s not hard but if it catches you the wrong way it hurts. At 5 months old she has her permanent teeth. We have been working on telling her no and redirecting her to chew toys. We also turn away from her when she does this. Both of these things work to a degree. Lately when we turn away she will nip at loose clothing or the back of pants legs. We are hoping she grows out of this phase soon. 2 Quote

Sounds like Iggy's a quick learner ~ The two most valuable deals we ever teach any of our pups is "Wait" and "Leave It". Wait includes a 'sit' and happens several times a day in many different instances; at every door (we go through first), before we cross any road or street and just about anytime we need the dog to stop what he/she is doing and take a breath. Invaluable, IMO. Leave It can be a life saver. Keeps the pups from picking up and eating bad stuff, gets them to stop chasing the local animals,(Deer, snakes, toads, porcupines, skunks) you get the idea. Instant compliance is ALWAYS rewarded with treats (we just use their food) and we have it with us at ALL times; especially during the 'training stages'. Having pups that are willing to please makes this pretty easy, but high prey drive dogs can go 'red' pretty quick so it usually takes more time and a determined training philosophy. The successful results are fun & gratifying. This is a clip of "RD" a 10 month old red Malamute that we fostered. He was deemed "Viscous & destructive" and "Unadoptable" - not what I found. After 10 weeks with us and we placed him in a great home. A-Jay 1 Quote

I noticed the hand gestures you make and plan on incorporating them into my training. You're welcome. Depending on the environment (loud or not) the hand gestures can play a big role. Understanding that the dogs don't exactly understand everything I say, the hand gestures convey the message loud & clear every time. As time went on I figured out that the pups are usually keying in on what I do and how I do it, far more then what I 'say". A-Jay 1 Quote
