If they had it during the peak days of Southern CA monster fishing, I bet it would have worked fantastically there though. I watched over the summer MLF dudes just kill up north basically spot locking on offshore isolated cover and put 20lb bags in the boat in one or two locations. Clearly FFS was playing a huge role in that equation. I understand what your saying but the world record smallmouth is 11lbs-15ozs and that is long ways away from the recently caught 8lb plus smallies. There has been zero, ziltch numbers of recent smallie catches exceeding 10lbs. Last 10lber caught was 1986 by Paul Beal from Dale Hollow. Based on statistics the largemouth record has a better chance of being broken not the smallmouth record. https://weather.com/sports-recreation/fishing/news/bassmaster-top-smallmouth-bass-20120403 2 Quote
Super User WRB Posted October 7, 2022 Super User Posted October 7, 2022 Today it’s so much easier to validate a potential world record bass with smart phone photos and instant communication to fishery biologist or wardens who can authenticate a catch. California transporting a potential away from the lake to have it weighed violates State regulations if the fish is alive. You had to kill the bass to validate in the past. The odds in California of a world record LMB today are low but still possible, Spotted Bass is probable. Tom PS, 20 lb+ LMB are rare fish, O.H.Ivie lake record is 17.06 lbs, Texas State record 18.18 lbs. for example. 1 Quote

I mostly agree with this. It may not have been broken, but if it has I think there is a high probability it was released immediately. If I caught a record sized bass, be it state record, world record, largemouth or smallmouth, there is a 100% chance that my priority will be getting the fish back in the water to swim another day, not some record that will put me and my lake in the public eye, and result in the death of a giant fish. 3 Quote

The state record of every single state is still swimming. The chances of someone catching, literally, the largest fish in the state, are astronomical. 1 Quote
Super User TOXIC Posted October 8, 2022 Super User Posted October 8, 2022 Was out fishing yesterday with my buddy who has ffs and I was on the front deck with him since we took another guy as a favor and he had to use the Bill Dance seat on the back deck. We were catching a lot of dinks when he turned the boat to reposition and he looked down at his graph as we swung around and said, there’s a biggun out here in the middle of nowhere….he cast his Ned out to it and BAM! Hooked up and brought it boatside where it threw the hook but I got to see it and it was a good 4lber. Made me a believer. No place to hide. Quote

On the pro tours northern swing this year , many reported they never saw the SMB until they launched off bottom to get a lure. They can still hide on bottom, especially rock bottom 1 Quote

I have a friend who tried for three years to bag a particular whitetail on his property. He hunted or scouted almost every day of the year. He saw the buck many times, and found it's shed antlers every spring. He new every inch of the deer's home range, like the back of his hand, was an excellent marksman, had eyes like a hawk, trail cameras, Ziess binoculars, and was an expert woodsman. He never even got a shot at the buck. Catching a world record bass is even more difficult than bagging a trophy deer. A deer you only have to find them, and get a clear shot at hundreds of yards. A bass not only do you have to locate the bass, you have to be able to get them to bite. Modern electronics may help locate a bass, but like a deer, the bass will always be able to find a place to hide. My friends big buck eventually got hit by a car at night. Just like the world record bass could easily get caught by some one fishing for catfish with a cane pole. 5 Quote
Super User WRB Posted October 9, 2022 Super User Posted October 9, 2022 California’s State record Smallmouth Bass is just shy of 10 lbs @ 9.84 lbs. The same NoCal foothill lakes that produce record Spotted bass also have the ecosystems to produce record size Smallmouth bass. Over looked is Lake Havasu a Colorado River lake boarding Arizona and California. Havasu has produced WR Red Sunfish feeding on quagga mussels, however the Smallmouth bass in Havasu are growing to fast and may be surprise as 7 lb Smallies are showing up. Tom 1 Quote
