Capriceragtop Posted August 11, 2022 Posted August 11, 2022 Hey folks! I've got a trip planned in the fall, and I'll be travelling by plane. I presently own no two-piece rods, so I'm looking for suggestions on travel rods that I can carry on the plane with me. I've got several St. Croix Premier, so I've been eying the St Croix Triumph four piece. Would prefer a two piece rod, but I can't find much info as to whether or not I can carry that onboard. Would like to avoid checking it, if possible. I'm leaning towards a medium heavy, as that seems to be the stoutest rod I can locate that will pack well. Open to correction, though. Don't care if it's casting or spinning. Planning on taking some Panther Martin spinners, spoons, etc. Concern is being able to throw lighter (1/4oz), but still be able to handle a pike if I hook into one. From what I can tell, the expected species I'll run into are: pike, trout, salmon, perch. I may even hook into the Loch Ness Monster. Fresh water. Budget is $150-$200 for the rod. I presently don't travel with fishing gear, but if I get the right stuff, I may in the future. Any suggestions? 1 Quote
Super User king fisher Posted August 11, 2022 Super User Posted August 11, 2022 You can carry on 2 piece rods. If you want to buy new I recommend a Diawa ardito travel rod. Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted August 11, 2022 Super User Posted August 11, 2022 The trouble with longer two piece rods is the overall length. Many smaller planes don't have overhead bins long enough to accommodate. Then the flight crew will make you check it plane side. You need a travel case adequate to keep your rod safe from other passengers cramming luggage into the overhead bins. Most designated travel rods are three or four pieces. Quote
PressuredFishing Posted August 11, 2022 Posted August 11, 2022 Are you serious fishing or fishing for fun. Telescopic rods are okay for that. Two piece spinning rods seem much easier to find than casting if you don't want to spend a ton of money or buy a zebco rod. Quote
Fishingmickey Posted August 11, 2022 Posted August 11, 2022 I did a search on Tackle Warehouse for Travel rods and they showed a bunch. https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/search-tackle.html?start=0&count=30&searchtext=travel+rods I have several travel rods. I like the looks of the Falcon and Major Craft. I have both the Diawa Ardito and St Croix Avid travel rods. Another good place to hunt for travel rods is the japan websites. FM 1 Quote

Given work travel is picking back up, I may have more and more opportunities to use a good travel rod. Quote
Super User bulldog1935 Posted August 11, 2022 Super User Posted August 11, 2022 I used to fly Conquest puddle jumpers across south Texas to South Padre, and check my 8-1/2' GL2 in an Abel square tube. Since added a slightly shorter Simms round travel tube that fits 8' 2-pc. Both fit 4 rods each, and I load them up when driving far south. That said, you can Always carry on 3-pc rods. My kayak hold has back-up 3-pc casting and spinning - both rods fit in the case that came with the TackleDirect Silver Hook travel spinning rod. (plus fly rods) If you really want respect at TSA, pick up a leather document tube at Etsy to carry on your 3- and 4-pc rods. Most of the guys who sell rod socks on Etsy and ebay will make you whatever you want. A dozen trips to Alaska carrying 3 rods in this 35" tube. The Daiwa is a good choice, and so are the JDM Daiwa BBB telescoping rods. The Daiwa rods should come with a travel case. Quote

Diawa doesn't list, but my math shows they should be around 28". A little worried, as most airlines list a max carryon length of 22". 1 hour ago, Fishingmickey said: I did a search on Tackle Warehouse for Travel rods and they showed a bunch. https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/search-tackle.html?start=0&count=30&searchtext=travel+rods I have several travel rods. The Avid is a lighter, nicer rod but it is twice the price. They both have nice cases too. I've bundled the cases together with zip ties and I had no problems with airlines. I think they are longer then 22" though. Overall length is probably closer to 30-32". I've got the dedicated rods as far as the Diawa's go. Not the combo casting/spinning rod. I'll hit it with a tape measure this evening and let you know length. FM 1 Quote
Super User Jar11591 Posted August 12, 2022 Super User Posted August 12, 2022 They’re not made anymore, but if you can find a Fenwick Methods, I can recommend them enough for a travel rod. 3 piece rods but a 5 piece set, so depending on the model you can swap out the mid section as well as the tip to make it a medium or medium heavy or heavy, and the action can be moderate fast or fast. They come in a hard travel case as well. The Methods served me very well traveling to go bassin in Mexico. If you can find them available anywhere, snag them up and also let me know where you find them! Quote
looking45 Posted August 12, 2022 Posted August 12, 2022 I suggest you call the airline to see if you have to check in your lures and feels. Some airlines don’t allow eithe as carry ins. Have a good trip Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted August 12, 2022 Super User Posted August 12, 2022 I have 3 travel rods, 2 spinning and 1 casting. Spinning: St Croix Triumph Medium 4 Piece Fenwick Eagle Medium 3 piece Casting: Shimano Convergence 7’ Medium 4 piece I recommend any of them. The St Croix tip section is a noodle and I have no issues throwing light lures with it. The Convergence is pretty nice considering the price. I really put it to the test catching Channel Cats before my Florida trip. Quote
JS8588 Posted August 12, 2022 Posted August 12, 2022 I have 3 Arditos and love em. This might suit your needs better, though. M or MH depending upon the situation. https://toadfish.com/products/stowaway-travel-rods?variant=34441704997000¤cy=USD&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&utm_campaign=gs-2022-06-08&utm_source=google&utm_medium=smart_campaign&gclid=CjwKCAjw9NeXBhAMEiwAbaY4lqNu0p_vD2T3ogosf1ziPkM-zxuU3bwgCZqWEyxpJ-O3UGPTTonVxBoCFqUQAvD_BwE 1 Quote
txchaser Posted August 13, 2022 Posted August 13, 2022 I bought a couple of fenwick HMG travel rods and loved them. Both casting and spinning came with two tips, MH/M and M/ML, respectively 1 Quote
Revival Posted August 13, 2022 Posted August 13, 2022 I just came back from a trip and brought my Daiwa Ardito spinning rod (3 piece) and my Fenwick HMG casting rod (3 piece but can switch out tips between M and MH). I put all the pieces in the HMG case. It was a little shorter than the Ardito case and it was able to fit diagonally in my wife’s suitcase. Quote

I was able to carry it on the flight without having to check it in as luggage. The carry case it comes with easily fits several lures, hooks etc in it so I didn’t even bring an extra tackle box. Bought this rod because of the price point and if it gets beat up a bit I won’t be hurting. Will be leaving this in my truck when I’m done my trip so I’ll always have it with me. 1 Quote
