Lots of trolling and the owner of the cabins we stay at, N WI, fills his freezer with lipless baits, zero livebait. I used to fish crawlers for walleyes, but it was inefficient and made a mess in the boat. I actually use the gulp nightcrawlers now instead because the real ones were messy and slimy, as you stated. Plus the real ones kept getting pecked by panfish. I primarily used them in midsummer trolling a spinner rig so a gulp one worked just as well since I was going for a quick reaction strike anyways. 1 Quote
Dan N Posted August 9, 2022 Posted August 9, 2022 I don’t believe I’ve ever felt like I’ve killed a fish I’ve caught on a ned rig. And I’m a big fan and user of them. Quote

The video is intended to get people to try to make a better effort at not gut hooking fish. Obviously he has seen enough of them on neds to be concerned. Maybe guys here haven't because maybe the guys here are more careful . That doesn't mean he should be ridiculed and called a has been. He is forming his opinion on his personal observations. Quote

Instantly as in as soon as I noticed the line jump or right after I felt a thump. It's almost humanly impossible to set the hook instantly instantly Lol. Quote
Junk Fisherman Posted August 10, 2022 Posted August 10, 2022 TLDW I fish a Ned A LOT and I’ve never had to cut my line and leave the bait in its mouth. Quote
Super User Darth-Baiter Posted August 10, 2022 Super User Posted August 10, 2022 i took a bigger bass once and it had 5 senkos in various stages of rot packed in its mouth. full irony, that i caught the greedy fish on yet another senko. my friend and i pulled them out, one was halfway down the hole. we let it go as fast as we could. i never put a used plastic in the water after seeing that. i stuff them anywhere i can for disposal later. I think this happens after the senko falls off the hook when the fish jumps and sinks down to the bottom. A ned being like a tiny senko, they are prone to swallow it. At least the ned doesn’t fly off the hook nearly as often, but they snag and get left on the bottom with the hook in them more than anything Quote

We must all do what we can to help prevent this. We must all make a extreme effort to do the least damage possible. I've never had a bass swallow a ned rig, but then again I'm quick at setting the hook when something doesn't feel right. I feel like the ned rig isn't made for everyone though. Some people wait extremely long to set the hook, the same problem can be said with senkos. Quote
rangerjockey Posted August 11, 2022 Posted August 11, 2022 It can happen with any bait that gets bit on the drop a lot. My wife fishes the thing year round and maybe we will get 1 or 2 with it past their crushers per year. I'd rather it never happened but it's going to sooner or later. Personally, I've killed more fish on a yellow magic than a ned . 2 Quote
