Super User Sam Posted August 5, 2022 Super User Posted August 5, 2022 Wife's 2019 Toyota RAV4 guage cluster changed the guages' outline from white to red. So I put air in the tires and a new battery in the fob, and the lights turned back to white until I got home where they went to red again. The car sent her a message stating that she needed an oil change which I will handle next week. Anyone out there with any RAV4 experience know of why this occurred? Thanks. Quote
Big Rick Posted August 5, 2022 Posted August 5, 2022 The color changes to red in Sport Mode, I believe. Read the owners manual. Page 353 has this info: ■ When changing to a driving mode other than normal mode ●The background color of the multi- information display changes according to the selected driving mode. I don't have a Rav4. I just like vehicles. 1 Quote
Captain Phil Posted August 5, 2022 Posted August 5, 2022 I have a 2020 Ford Explorer. The dash gauge background color changes on my car with the drive mode. Red is Sport mode. The modes are Normal, Eco, Sport and Tow/Haul. The default is Normal which the car returns to when the ignition is turned off. By the way, my Explorer gets 30 mpg on the highway in Eco. Pretty good for a SUV. 1 Quote
813basstard Posted August 5, 2022 Posted August 5, 2022 My truck has so many miles on it all the dash ever says now is: ‘Good Luck!’ So I got that going for me..which is nice 7 Quote
Super User Sam Posted August 6, 2022 Author Super User Posted August 6, 2022 Thanks guys for the input. Seems to be the "background lighting" from the "sport" guage, as stated by you all above. Bob, the service manager at Haley Toyota on Midlothian Turnpike in Chesterfield County, Virgina, said he had never seen the red background guage lights before and he would research the problem and get back to me. Of course, Bob said the same thing this past winter when we had a glich with the RAV4 and he never called back so I don't think Bob will call back. Wayne, at the local Bon Air BP station, and a great bass fisherman, looked at the situation and he deternined that the background guage lights were from one of the "drive settings" but we could not get them to turn off. Since the lights do not interfere with the the engine or other aspects of driving the RAV4, we will just leave them alone. Big Rick, you nailed the manual pages, too. Thanks a milliion for the guidance. Captain Phil, thanks for the input. Made me feel better about the red lights. Maybe the background gauge lights will return to all white after the next service. Sometime around the late seventies, I bought a new Cadillac from a dealership in Miami. It was my first really nice car and I was pleased with my purchase. The first week I had it, the engine would die intermittently. This happened a few times in the middle of an intersection. I took it back and the service manager said they had never seen that before. I left the car with them and returned later that afternoon. When I walked back into the service department, all the service bays where full of new Cadillacs like mine that the mechanics where attempting to start. "We have never seen that before" is mechanic speak for "We don't have a clue". 1 Quote

In all actuality, the sales person that sold it to you should've given you a thorough walk through on the settings and gauges. I would go back in there and request it. It's part of buying the car. Of course, I'm assuming you DID buy it from an actual dealership and not an individual. Quote

We spoke wiht Bryce, who is now the general manager for the Haley Chevy franchise, and he said to bring it to him and he will take a look at it. So you are right on target. Thank you and the guys who helped me with this situation. Sincerely appreciate your feedback. Quote
