Super User Darth-Baiter Posted August 5, 2022 Super User Posted August 5, 2022 are there single technique combos? for example, mine. it might be my punch rig. I only use it for punching weed mats. I only cut the bait off to change the weight from a 1oz to 1.75oz. if I bring it with me, it is only because I expect to find weed mats. I am rigged up for tomorrow's trip to the California Delta. is the Frog set up a single-tasker as well? I kinda want to buy a frog set up. rig it up with (dunno) 40ish pound braid? I could use it for pitching heavier cover I suppose. I suspect tomorrows frog or topwater bite will be on fire, and I am woefully unprepared. I just kinda pick my heaviest rod and go for it with varied results. my dilemma is that I DONT want a bunch of rods. I kayak fish so I cannot and will not bring a huge rod arsenal. I value rod combos that can play multiple tasks. the multi tasker. I think some shallow spool caster with a heavy rod would be useful. I dont cast frogs to the horizon, but will fling a whopper plopper as far as I can to hide my approach. see? I suppose I am evolving as a bass fisherman. I typically fish open waters like Clearlake. but I am venturing in the Delta more and more. somedays, it's like the "THUNDERDOME" of fishing. snags, sunken boats, etc. my medium heavy rigs with 12lb flouro seems like taking a knife to ,,,nevermind Quote
DaubsNU1 Posted August 5, 2022 Posted August 5, 2022 I don't have any "technique-specific" combos. I have 8 rods from purchased in the 1990's. I like rods that can multi-task. Typically take three spinning rods, and three bait-casters on my boat. Lately I've been leaving the Berkley medium-heavy bait-caster and one of my medium action spinning rods at home. I am pretty confident throwing anything in my arsenal with the 6 rods on my boat. When I fish on my brother's boat, I bring just two rods...the Cabela's XML-Ti spinning rod, and the Fish Eagle II Cx2 bait-caster. They meet 90% of my needs when fishing. 1 Quote
FrnkNsteen Posted August 5, 2022 Posted August 5, 2022 My frog rod is single task. It's a Duckett Terex Dean Rojas frog rod. I don't use it a lot here in Indiana. Our reservoir's water levels rise and fall so much there's not much for weed beds or frog areas. I got it and its reel for cheap when Gander Mt shutdown and have a 13 Inception on it, so it sits unless I go somewhere that I may need it. I have a few rigs that are single purpose and don't change. Jerkbait rig, Buzzbait rig, Spook rig 3 Quote

Super User Darth-Baiter Posted August 5, 2022 Author Super User Posted August 5, 2022 at least the line is within my budge!! haha..thanks. I had a chance to buy a similar rod, but the guy retired from Gloomis before I got a chance to jump on board. Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted August 5, 2022 Super User Posted August 5, 2022 The closest I have to single technique combos are my frog rod. I can throw other things on my frog rod like medium sized swimbaits and A-Rigs, but I largely just fish a frog on it. A flipping rod is close, but you can throw a jig, pegged T-Rig on flipping hooks or a punching rig really but it's all stuff that you would throw into heavy cover. I do have a lot of rods that are slightly less universal and geared towards certain techniques than others however. For example, I have 4 rods that throw an assortment of lures that could be accomplished with just a MH/F and a M/F. Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted August 5, 2022 Super User Posted August 5, 2022 There are only a few lures, presentations, and conditions that require extreme specific rods, for most things there is a wide range of rods that would do the job adequately. 2 Quote
Super User webertime Posted August 5, 2022 Super User Posted August 5, 2022 A Megabass Perfect Pitch model is a great frog, swimbait, flipping and Carolina rig, bigger jig rod. Quote

Save me some typing. im in a kayak also so rods have to do double duty most of the time. I carry 4-6 rods depending on the lake and the day. That said, I almost always have a chatterbait, jig and/or swim jig, a topwater, and a beaver on. The rods that I throw them on you could almost call dedicated. Quote
FrnkNsteen Posted August 6, 2022 Posted August 6, 2022 I guess I didn't understand the question. If the question is are there certain rods that are only good for one technique, then in my opinion,... No. Pretty much any rod I can think if could be used for something else. That being said, I have a few setups that are only used for one thing because I like how they handle those lures. For example, my jerkbait setup is a SLX MGL on a 6'6" Academy Ethos MH F rod. It is light, balanced exceptionally well, and has a soft enough tip to cast a good distance, but short/fast enough to snap the tip down without slapping the water and get good action in the bait. Its a fairly cheap setup that fishes those baits really well for me. Could that rod be used for something else? Absolutely, but for me it is dedicated to that one technique. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted August 6, 2022 Global Moderator Posted August 6, 2022 Everything I own can be used for something else. My punch and weightless set ups are the only 2 that I use almost exclusively for each of those, but in pitch they’ll work for a few other things Mike Quote
Super User WRB Posted August 6, 2022 Super User Posted August 6, 2022 Before Dobyns opened pandora’s box offering application specific bass rods we used 2; bait casting “6’6” bass rod today called 7’ MHF and a 7’ crank bait rod called MHMF. These were the all tasker rods for over 30 years. Swimbaits Rods were relegated to west coast anglers using Musky rods. Tom 2 Quote
Manifestgtr Posted August 8, 2022 Posted August 8, 2022 I’m a bad offender in this realm. Most of my combos are specific to various “confidence baits”…844c jig rod, medium/fasts for weightless plastics, etc. I can get it alllll done with 5-6 combos, though. My frog rod doubles on jigs if that bite is hot and my medium/fasts will cover jerkbaits, chatters, spinners and flukes if those bites are hot. It mostly comes down to my lack of patience on the water. If I want to switch from a fluke to a jig, I want to do it NOW. It’s that artist’s/builder’s philosophy: “the shortest path between your idea and its implementation”. First order retrievability…reach for it and go. It’s not for everyone and it leads to having more gear than you need but everyone has his own specific style. 1 Quote
Cbump Posted August 8, 2022 Posted August 8, 2022 My rods are technique specific but only 2 of 21 are specific to one thing. My deep cranking rod and my Carolina rig rod. I only do those things on those rods. The rest I do a few things on. For example, my frog rod is also my punching/pitching with braid rod. 65lb braid. My buzz bait rod is also my spook and horny toad rod. Quote
Super User AlabamaSpothunter Posted August 8, 2022 Super User Posted August 8, 2022 G Loomis Mag Bass GLX or above 6'6 MH rod is about the closest jack of all trades rod I've ever found. I buy two 6'6 MH rods to every one non 6'6 MH rod. Then again I fish a lot of slow moving bottom baits Quote

Cbump Posted August 8, 2022 Posted August 8, 2022 The 766flip is a good one. 4 minutes ago, Darth-Baiter said: i think i am gonna follow your lead and get myself a Sierra 766. I can’t remember if the Sierra comes in 736 or 746 but those would both be great also if you like a little shorter rod. I also have a falcon amistad which is a great rod for what you want in the 7’3” range. Quote
