Super User Darth-Baiter Posted August 5, 2022 Super User Posted August 5, 2022 .....pick a great WATERMELON!! summer is good bass fishing, and sweet watermelon!! what's your go-to tip? ME. I chose one with the biggest yellow spot that indicates it has been growing on the vine the longest. and I also pick it up and it should feel heavy for it's size. sadly, I am 50:50. I have picked a few duds this year. how do you do it?!! 1 Quote
Super User DitchPanda Posted August 5, 2022 Super User Posted August 5, 2022 When I worked at the grocery store I had an older lady that had me pick watermelons out of the bin for her....this went on for several summers. In that entire time I think I picked 2 crappy ones. No real technique..just lucky guesses. 1 Quote

Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted August 5, 2022 Global Moderator Posted August 5, 2022 I’ve seen people at the grocery store insist on somebody cutting it in half so they could see it. I actually like buying the halves because we inevitably can’t eat the whole thing 2 Quote
Super User Tennessee Boy Posted August 5, 2022 Super User Posted August 5, 2022 I’m a thumper. I buy the one that has the best drum sound. It’s probably all in my head. 2 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted August 5, 2022 Super User Posted August 5, 2022 May be inappropriate for rug rats. A-Jay 1 Quote
Skunkmaster-k Posted August 5, 2022 Posted August 5, 2022 A ripe watermelon will reverberate when you thump or slap it. Has a deeper tone as well. Quote

Lately the price has been 88 cents/pound so its pretty cheap and bursting with flavor. 1 Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted August 6, 2022 Global Moderator Posted August 6, 2022 I look to see if the pigtail on the vine directly across from the one I'm going to pick is dried out of not. Once they're dried, the fruit is ripe and ready. We grow our own and it's pretty much ruined me on buying store bought melons. 2 Quote
Super User Catt Posted August 6, 2022 Super User Posted August 6, 2022 My wife is crazy about Watermelons, she'll eat a whole one by herself. During peak season I buy 2 a week. Sugartown melons are arguably the sweetest on planet earth & are grown 50 miles north of here. I've tried every selection method known & it's a 50/50 crap shoot. Quote
Super User Mobasser Posted August 6, 2022 Super User Posted August 6, 2022 My very favourite are the large dark green Black Diamond water melons. My uncle grew and sold them years ago. Around here, good melons are hard to come by now. Mostly all I see are the small seedless type in the grocery store. It's a lucky guess which ones are good. We used to thump them and listen for a hollow thud sound. 1 Quote
