My wife doesn't drive, so I end up taking her 'grocery' shopping. The problem arises when we go to a store that sells everything, not just groceries. I end up heading for the fishing section and bringing home a couple of baits, or a spool of line that I really don't need. By the end of the season, I've filled up another 3700 and my pegboard is overflowing with plastics.  Then spring rolls around and the spring sales start. The monkey has his siblings over for a month or so.  :evil-0015:

*I now have adopted my wife's standard pat answer (for my newly acquired fishing tackle) whenever I comment about spotting her wearing yet another pair of new shoes : "Oh , you mean this old bait cast reel ?? ... I've had this thing a loooong time" !!

Buying line when you don't need it is on a whole different level of sickness. At least with baits you get that instant gratification of taking it out and admiring it, like you would a G.I Joe figure or Matchbox car when you were a kid. ???

(opens the drawer in the storage cart that has his line...peers at the virgin spools...closes the drawer with a slight blush)

With all the stuff I have accumulated over the years, I habitually use but a few that I have had success with in the past. The rest takes up space.

I saw my life flash before my eyes : Here I was at 103 years old plugged into life support system when the doctor tells my family : "It's time to pull the plug and send him on to his next awaited journey - he lived a long , happy life" ... After the family solemnly files out of the room - the bait monkey appears from behind a door , plugs the life support system plug back in - then jumps up and down on my chest to revive me ... As I open my eyes the bait monkey is repeating over and over and over again : "15% off at TW ... 15% off at TW , 15% off at TW - hurry there is still time to get your order in" !!

The bait monkey. He can be friend or foe.

I have more tackle then I could use in 2 lifetimes. It's ok. I'm  heading towards retirement and at that point I will slow way down but for now I buy what I want.

The one thing that has changed is over the last 30 years I have learned what works for me and very rarely buy the hot new bait(s).

The one thing to keep in mind; you may not be in a position to have latest and greatest so never let threads like these make you spend when you shouldn't.  The fish couldn't care less whether you have a $400.00 reel or a fancy boat. I went for years with lower end stuff and did just fine. The point being, be patient,  work hard, be smart and your day will come.
