Super User Columbia Craw Posted August 1, 2022 Super User Posted August 1, 2022 Some time back I dropped some images of two Dobyns Mavericks I picked up. They are headed to one of our club SAF teams. But. I was very curious about the 705CB model being it was not included in the Sierra series so I picked one up. I’ll just provide a thumbnail first impression. The blank and action are plain sweet. It’s a legit medium moderate. The rates from 1/4 to 1 ounce. I dunno about the ounce but throwing a DD22 is very well within the blank’s power. The tip action is amazing for a rod at this retail. The load and unload is really controllable. I can bomb cast or underhand roll cast a Pop R. The blank has a great flex that just begins to lock up at the end of the middle third of the blank. I guy can throw a broad range of baits with this model. The first thing I did when unwrapping it was get a guide count. Ten guides on seven foot cranking rod. That done right. Balance is on the first trim ring ahead of the lock nut. Not surprised. It’s a viable affordable option if you want a dedicated cranking rod. 4 Quote
evilcatfish Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 You think it could handle a full size super spook? I was considering this rod recently Quote

BTW: I toss my Super Spooks on a H/F... Quote
Super User WRB Posted August 3, 2022 Super User Posted August 3, 2022 Hard argue with the OP’s photo clearly 1/4oz- 1oz label on the rod. Tom Quote

I have a Fury 705CB that I love for lipless fishing, but the grip is sometimes a little pinchy even with my XL sized hands. I've been tempted to pick up a Maverick for the extra give in the EVA foam grip. Quote
Cbump Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 I have a Maverick 734c and it’s a great rod. I use It for spooks. Quote

The load is of course longer as is the unload of the blank but the blank was responsive and casts were controlled and long. Hook sets will require some force. So, not the optimal but certainly doable. Quote
