I told a guy I met here that if he's ever fishing and wants some company to let me know. Or I might just sit at a pond and chill out one of these days. Trying to keep my sanity intact.

yea.  like all things, this too shall pass.

be patient.

Take care of yourself first or you won't be able to go out next year.

I kind of feel your pain though, no fishing makes Dean go crazy lol. I haven't made it out in a few weeks now. A few weekends ago it was in the mid 90s, and last weekend it was perfect weather but I had a friend's picnic on Saturday and a family picnic on Sunday. Even before that, with the wedding and all I haven't got out nearly as much as I would like. I have a camping trip next week and if it doesn't thunderstorm the whole time, I should get some good fishing in.

Visited with Physical therapist today and he wants me to return to fishing. Some moderate progress in healing my injury but nothing crazy. Because of this, I will be very cautious in returning to fishing.

I’ll be more active on here as well. In my time off, I found new hobbies and learned to cook pretty well but to be honest the biggest thing I learned is that I have no idea how anybody goes through life without fishing, if they are able to, that is ?

I look forward to spending a short while fishing at a pond and seeing how things feel. Hopefully I can begin a slow resume to fishing and other activities but I want to be careful.

LOL.

The only thing I want more badly than to return to fishing is to get this injury healed. If I notice pain that doesn’t seem right, I am stopping.

Sorry, for some reason missed this. Yes. No kayak yet. I went out this afternoon and am very happy to report that it went OK. Back might even feel better after than before. Will ease back into fishing little by little. Kayak fishing might be a ways out, I don’t know yet. No fish but I don’t care! It’s like I rediscovered a part of me that had been missing. And it’d only been three weeks ?. I wonder how I ever made it through winters in NY

My Mom saw a chiropractor for at least 20 years, every week.

My parents recently moved to Oregon, well a year now. I asked her if she found another one (I always told her she was wasting her money).

"Well no. Whenever my neck feels tight I just stretch and it feels fine. I'm not going to look for another one"

I'm not totally against chiros but many claim they can do the impossible ("Brain Balancing" among others).

Don't be afraid of second opinions either. Some doctors aren't very good.

What do you call the person who graduated dead last in their class in medical school?

"Doctor"

I think I’ll be fishing for a little this weekend, once again trying to resume activities! I made a few key changes in my daily routine + physical therapist and I are now solidly on the same page with what needs to happen. Been seeing rather rapid progress over past few days in terms of pain level and functionality in some things. Hoping this isn’t another fleeting glimmer of hope. Been extremely rough trying to heal this. Stay healthy y’all and take care of your body.

Great news and remember to take it slow and easy at first!

Thanks man. I actually plan on taking a break every 20 minutes or so. taking breaks while doing daily activities that can cause me pain was one of the key changes I made in my routine.

Good to hear, glad you’re healing well.

I’ve been struggling with flu like symptoms this week. Haven’t been able to do much. Tested negative for Covid. Can’t wait to get back into it.

Let me guess, your first cast is with a spinnerbait? :)

Good luck and listen to your body.

Of course I’m going to toss a spinnerbait! Lol.

Symptoms did worsen a little but I can’t remember doing anything wrong…. think I’m still okay… we’ll see what happens over next few days.

Tried some stretching and that didn’t seem to hurt it any even though there was some short-term discomfort. So going to try regular stretching similar to what @throttleplate did for his rhomboid issue.

I feel like I’m getting close to finding the right concoction of behaviors that will speed up healing and make this more manageable. I have no idea what the outlook is like for long-term recovery

Back injuries are no joke. Please forgive my ignorance, I have no idea how you injured it and where - upper/lower?

Growing up, I never stretched, warmed-up prior to working out or playing ball or hockey. Just went and did it. Now, I warm up, stretch and foam roll, believe it or not. I can not believe how much a few minutes of foam rolling changed me from being so tight to being a little more fluid from a mobility stand point.

I hope you find your routine to get you moving again without pain. Noting like feeling handcuffed with everything you do.

Good luck, mi amigo.

Thanks. It is my upper back, but not really. Shoulder I believe is more accurate, and to a degree on both sides of my body. I do not have a diagnosis. By now Ive probably hurt it over half a dozen times because it’s been truly very hard to heal. I initially called it a “lat” injury but now I’m thinking that aspect may be my teres minor? I dunno. Physical therapy is aimed at helped my lat, rhomboid, teres minor, and mobility. There might be some supraspinatus stuff going on too. Just the shoulder blade, basically, is what I think it is. How I’ve hurt it in the past: Lat cable rows from elevated arm position, one arm and torso a bit rotated (there could be some bad form here), paddling, front squatting, carrying stuff in front of my body, repetitive shoulder motions, especially when there is some back-and-forth going on… includes washing dishes, wiping surfaces, sweeping, etc.

Its okay. I generally feel like I’m being taken of when I go into PT and I’ve seen some mild progress recently and have an idea of what is good for it and what isn’t. But even my PT guy agrees that it will be a long road for recovery

So why does fishing aggravate it? I believe it’s the “throwing” motion of casting and the repetitiveness of the activity

I'm just a jigfishhead and NOT a PT. I had a shoulder injury and I found, for me, this is what worked: Foam rolling the lat, then performed prayer stretches. After stretches I did this exercise for my rotator cuff - teres minor, supraspinatus and Infraspinatus (external rotation).

https://www.catalystathletics.com/exercise/587/Band-Row-External-Rotation-Press/

Not so much for the subscapularis (internal rotation).

I used a light to medium exercise cable and within  a week or so I was pretty much G to G.

I dismissed foam rolling thinking that there is no way that it works. I couldn't be more wrong.

I think I outta pick up a foam roller and tennis ball

Thanks

I have some days off from PT where I can try those exercises.

PT guy will put a heated blanket on my upper back after conclusion of exercises and that helps a good bit also. So I got two hot packs

I have a regular foam roller and one that looks more like a 36" long foam roller cut in half lengthwise, which is much easier for me to use.

Thanks for suggestions and help y’all. I’ve decided against fishing this weekend, don’t think I’m ready, symptoms took a downturn a bit ago. I did notice that when I perform some exercises intended strengthen the rotator cuff muscles, my shoulder stability improves. Since it’s been a while, fortunately, since I’ve done anything to “hurt” this injury, instead of fishing I’m going to look at more aggressively and regularly performing PT. Stretching the rotator cuff muscles directly seems to worsen my symptoms and shoulder stability but strengthening might actually help. It’s my left shoulder too, and I am right handed. Who woulda thunk.

have you gone to see a orthopedic surgeon, have an mri done? If not its you whom needs to tell the dr or therapist that you want an mri, its your body your choice.

Therapists need to make money so they may just string you along without knowing what the structure of your shoulder joint looks like.
