Super User jbsoonerfan Posted July 26, 2022 Super User Posted July 26, 2022 I guess I just don't get it. People start freaking out when the amount gets up super high. They act as if they won 30 million they just couldn't make it. But when it gets up to 500 + people all the sudden want to start playing. Some people are just dumb I guess. Got my ticket in hand! 2 2 Quote
Super User gim Posted July 26, 2022 Super User Posted July 26, 2022 I’m not interested in $30 million. I’m only interested in $500 million. Haha 1 Quote
Global Moderator 12poundbass Posted July 27, 2022 Global Moderator Posted July 27, 2022 I don’t get it either and I hate gambling with a passion, but when it gets this big I pick up a ticket and tell the wife to grab one. We’d probably all be more miserable with all that money and the problems and extra relatives that would come with it. ? 2 Quote

Don't get it ...people making 40-60k a year saying yeah he only won 2 lifetimes worth. Dumb. Quote

This guy ONLY won $1M I used to work with a kid who would buy hundreds of dollars of scratchers every week. I think he was 24 when he won $1M payable in a 20 year annuity. At that time, he was making less than $40K a year and the annuity would have paid him $35K a year +/-. He was still living at home at the time. I told him to keep the annuity. After taxes and the fees to sell the annuity, I think he was between $600K-$700K cash out. He bought a house for $250K and ticked away the rest at the casino. Quote
Super User soflabasser Posted July 27, 2022 Super User Posted July 27, 2022 My Statistics teacher taught us that you have a better chance getting bit by a shark than winning a big lottery. He is correct, since more people get bit by sharks than win millions in a lottery. Quote

Probably have a better chance of getting struck by lightning again though. 1 Quote

We’ll start a BR lottery pool and send you all the money for you to buy the tickets for us. If you’ve been bitten by a shark too I’ll double what I send you! ? 2 Quote

Super User roadwarrior Posted July 27, 2022 Super User Posted July 27, 2022 The present value of a ticket is zero and the chance of winning is no greater, but daydreaming about what you could do might be worth $2. 3 Quote

I buy a ticket every now and then - doesn't matter what the pot is at, even at minimum it'd help us quite a bit. Wife and I do do the daydreaming thing...toss ideas back-and-forth about what we'd do if we actually did win. I think I contribute maybe $40 a year...since by MN law, part of the state's share of the lottery proceeds go to the DNR, it's something I'm willing to help. Since 1990 when it started up, the MN DNR has received $1.2billion from it's share of the lottery proceeds. https://www.mnlottery.com/blog/playing-our-part-for-minnesota-species Quote

I read in the June edition of Midwest Outdoors these odds: you have a better chance to get struck by lightning twice in the same day AND win the lottery than you do to catch the next world record muskie. So ya, there’s that. 1 1 Quote

So ya, there’s that. ^^ I've heard this as well...better odd of getting struck by lightning twice on same day vs. winning lottery. Not sure on the Musky part : ) ^^ Talked with a guy who worked for a company that advised lottery winners. They said if you do win the lottery, do the following immediately: Do not tell ANYONE! Especially family and friends. Cancel all your credit cards, close them out. Cancel your phone Lock down your bank account Call an attorney Keep going to work Figure out how you want to accept the $$, lump sum, annual payments. Set up a trust. Figure out how much you will be sharing with kids, family, etc. Set aside some fun $$ for you and spouse. Lock down a big chunk in to long term stuff to plan for future. Then lock remainder down...so if anyone comes asking, you can honestly say, "can't access that $$." ** Yep, I've thought WAAAY to much about this stuff...I should probably buy a ticket every now and then ** My one-liner at work is this..."you will know I've won the lottery...there will be popcorn in every microwave, set to 40 minutes...and you will never see me again!" (our office has a ban on microwave popcorn...it's a long story... : ) 3 Quote

Super User J._Bricker Posted July 27, 2022 Super User Posted July 27, 2022 When that someone eventually wins this lottery prize, Uncle Sam is also gonna be a big winner. As for chucking in a couple bucks on a billion dollar pot, why not? Someone’s got to win. At this point in my opinion it’s kinda like putting a few dollars in the company Super Bowl pool, or the 50-50 at HS football game… good luck to those playing. By the way, when IS the next drawing?
