Spinnerbait Weight

Bought some 3/8 Booyah Covert  spinnerbaits with 4.5 blades, checked the weight as that's how I store mine and found they are really 5/8 oz. Is 3/8 just the jig head?

I think only difference between the 3/8 and 1/2 blade sizes is the 1/2 comes with a bigger front colorado right?

Yes, this is the common case with MOST spinnerbaits. 

 

Blades, skirts, beads, swivels, etc are not factored into the weight.

Sure. Go purchase every manufactured spinnerbait on the market and ship them to me. I will weigh them all and tell you which ones go by jig weight and which ones go by furnished weight.

Woah there…. I only asked because I wanted to know if you knew which ones are different. Was not challenging you in any way. Just wanted information. Since you don’t know, okay. I still don’t doubt that there are ones on the market that, as you say, are labeled by total weight and not jig weight.

I've fished spinnerbaits for nearly 40 years and have never noticed one that was accurate based on the weight advertised. I'll also add that the diameter of the wire also has a big affect on the baits action, drag in the water and the overall feeling of weighing more than scales indicate.

Today I learned that Woah is improper/informal and whoa is correct.

Did real good on a 3/8oz chart/blue Covert 2 weekends ago. Red head with orange and copper Colorado blades in a muddy creek.

So the standard that Cast Industries and most others use for determining weight is just the lead itself.  If you actually weigh most 3/8oz labeled spinnerbaits they are like 5/8 or more.

This applies to pretty much everything, jigs, jigheads, buzzbaits, spinnerbaits, chatterbaits etc...

You are going to be hearing a lot of that.

Got 4, biggest right around 3 lbs, fished around a crazy downpour and wind, missed a few more than usual. We got some needed rain, should be good next couple of days.

I pour my own and the weight is the lead head . I dont know what the finished weights are . I like the extra weight on a half over a 3/8 but with the smaller blades of a 3/8.  A 4.5 willow paired with a  smaller Colorado . I wreck them with that combo
