washedkevin Posted July 24, 2022 Posted July 24, 2022 I have fished the Rage Bug a few times and have caught a decent amount of fish with them and really enjoy using them. Im trying to expand my creature bait arsenal and have been looking into the D bomb. I fish open water/pretty clear water with alot of grass on the bottom. Is the D bomb another good alternative for the Rage bug mainly fishing open water on a texas rig? Any recommendations are really appreciated. 1 Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted July 24, 2022 Super User Posted July 24, 2022 There may be times when an alternative to Rage Bug is called for. I'll probably never know. I have had one tied on since it came out maybe 7 years ago. I admit there are times when I force it, but if I change, I usually go to a completely different form. I have had some moderate success with DBomb and Sweet Beaver, Bandito, etc. But never enough to buy more. I do keep some Pit Bosses around, but they don't get wet a whole lot. In my mind, I feel they are more of a jig alternative than a Rage Bug alternative. 2 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 24, 2022 Global Moderator Posted July 24, 2022 It's easy for me, the Rage Bug catches fish and the D Bomb doesn't. No idea why but I can put a D Bomb in all the fish holding places in the world and they don't touch it, but switch to a Rage Bug or one of my other favorite beaver baits and I'm back in business. 4 Quote

You're not the first person I've heard say this. I don't fish either, but I know the RB is a fish catcher. Not many seem to speak highly of the DB. I roll my own and am partial to the Ultra Molds Sweet Craw 3.5, and the Do-It Molds, Baby Berry for my Creature baits. Quote

I’m the exact opposite, I can’t catch a cold on most strike king baits! Maybe it’s a confidence thing but I catch more quality and quantity with DBombs. Quote
softwateronly Posted July 24, 2022 Posted July 24, 2022 XZone adrenaline craw and gambler stinger have caught for me t-rigged in grassy, clear water, but SK RB is my first choice. RI Beaver and RB are my preferred jig trailers. Hard to beat a RB if kicking is what they want. scott 1 Quote

LOL. We see a lot of this at the dock in the salt. Every boat has their "they would only bite this" story at the end of the day, and each has a different lure, and everyone fished the same pod of fish. 1 Quote
Super User Catt Posted July 24, 2022 Super User Posted July 24, 2022 Rage Bug, Midsize Rage Bug, or Magnum Rage Bug. Quote
Sphynx Posted July 24, 2022 Posted July 24, 2022 You guys spell VileBug funny... In all seriousness, I don't think it makes a ton of difference, just buy the one that's on sale lol. 2 Quote
Super User casts_by_fly Posted July 24, 2022 Super User Posted July 24, 2022 I got a great deal on d-bombs and bought a bunch, both regular and mini. I use them as jig trailers and they work for that. Never fished them bare though. Quote
5/0 Posted July 24, 2022 Posted July 24, 2022 Have not fished the D Bomb, but my first experience with a jika rig was with the Rage Bug. Was pleasantly surprised with the success I had with it! I alternated it with a Sweet Beaver. They hit the bug, left beaver alone. It’s got to be the shape of the claws and how they move water. Quote
Revival Posted July 24, 2022 Posted July 24, 2022 Not a consistent T-rig guy but DBomb in Superbug killed it for me one day. I use the Rage bugs more as trailers. Quote
Super User DitchPanda Posted July 24, 2022 Super User Posted July 24, 2022 Rage bug has more aggressive action..D bomb is more subtle with very little flapping motion in my experience. I think of the rage baits as both solid trailers and great stand alone baits. The D bomb has been best for me on the back of a flipping jig especially in tough conditions or cold water. 2 Quote
Super User WRB Posted July 24, 2022 Super User Posted July 24, 2022 When I 1st joined BR Steve Parks was promoting his Rage Tail soft plastics and I bought several packages of craw style Rage Tails. I really liked the design and quality. I don’t recall the Rage Bug being available back then. RI Beavers and Smallie Beavers where the new hot item before everyone copied them. Long story shortened Rage Tails fast action for some reason only attracted 1 to 2 lb bass for me. Put a lot of fish less hours trying to make Rage Tails perform and gave it up. Oddly RI Beavers worked good in the same time and locations. Berkley Chigger Craws and Yamamoto Twin Tail Hula grubs out fished all other soft plastic craws for me. Tom 1 Quote

Super User A-Jay Posted July 24, 2022 Super User Posted July 24, 2022 Rage Bug on a Swinghead has been very very good to me. Especially in the fall. A-Jay 1 Quote

Big Swimbait Posted July 25, 2022 Posted July 25, 2022 (edited) I really like SK Rage baits. The bug has worked well on a swing-head as A-Jay already noted. But my fav Rage bait by far is the Rage Tail Shad followed by the Menace. But back on topic, I had an epic day on the Baby D-Bomb a few years ago. I love scrounging through pawn shops and bought a bundle of 3600s full of hard and soft baits for $25.00. But one was FULL of the Baby D-Bomb in Desert Storm. I don't know if they even make that color anymore. I put one on a 3/0 Gammy jig head and was culling in an hour. I have never duplicated that on that bait or the big brother. Super User Munkin Posted July 25, 2022 Super User Posted July 25, 2022 I am a creature bait aficionado myself. All of them work but some more than others . In my experience the top 3 are; smallie beaver, baby brush hog, and chigger craw. There are certain lakes where others work better but overall these are the best. Now if I am trying to catch bigger fish to upgrade in a tournament then its; Yamamoto kreature, Super Hog, and Yamamoto hulu grub. Allen Quote
GReb Posted July 25, 2022 Posted July 25, 2022 D bomb has always produced for me around grass. I prefer a pit boss around wood. Quote
Cbump Posted July 25, 2022 Posted July 25, 2022 Some time ago I literally poured all of my creature baits into a gallon zip lock. I have SK rage bug and craw, Speed craws, brush hogs, some weird googan thing, something from net bait. All in either watermelon, watermelon red, green pumpkin, junebug, or some very close combination of those. When I’m pitching a t-rig, 99% of the time I reach in and just grab something. I really don’t think It matters. They bite them all. Except sweet beavers. I tried those and they were too thick for me. Couldn’t get a good hook set. Quote

I'm normally a RI beaver guy, but the d bombs seem to work fine. For me, the big fish beaver bait is the RI double wide 5.2 beaver in big texan. Quote
Super User Columbia Craw Posted July 25, 2022 Super User Posted July 25, 2022 The mid size Rage Bug in blue craw w. red flake is my total confidence pitching bait. We all have our go to’s. And for A-Jay, last October I handed my buddy a swing head with a green pumpkin RB rigged on it at a big bass event. He won it. 1 Quote
