LOL - There's usually at least a little truth in jest ~ And you're not that far off my friend. On both accounts. I will admit that 'for most of us', retirement puts us that much closer to the finish line. So get whatever it is while you can ! A-Jay 3 Quote

Super User GreenPig Posted July 24, 2022 Super User Posted July 24, 2022 I enjoy a couple hours of prep before every trip(1 - 3 times a week year round) and a 4 - 6 hour prep at the change of seasons. I find I can't sleep if I haven't retied every knot and double checked my loadout. 1 Quote
Super User gim Posted July 24, 2022 Super User Posted July 24, 2022 Your gear and tackle is a variable that you can control, so why leave a chance of failure? I see it as a similar variable with preventative maintenance on an engine. Do nothing and problems will eventually surface. 4 Quote
Deephaven Posted July 24, 2022 Posted July 24, 2022 I like to hang out in my boat on the water and in the garage.  Having everything where it should be puts me at ease as well.  3 Quote

papajoe222 Posted July 24, 2022 Posted July 24, 2022 I not only enjoy tackle prep prior to an outing, I enjoy mentally planning different strategies for it. Then, I reorganize everything based on what I decided was the best approach. What I end up with is a disorganized tackle box and a confused Papa. 4 Quote

I did this years ago and it really helps. Blue crankbait rods, black jig, black with red stripes Trig, red spinnerbait, khaki swim jig, Spinning are mostly yellow except the ML ones for DS those fairy wands get pink.  Allen 3 Quote

Super User Munkin Posted July 25, 2022 Super User Posted July 25, 2022 Organizing tackle depends on how I am fishing. What I mean by this is if it a tournament no matter how big or small I will spend hours organizing and come up with several plans. If I am just going fishing for fun then whatever is tied on and in the tackle bag is good enough for Government work.  Going through tackle is just meh to me. I don't hate it but don't get excited about it either.   Allen Quote
throttleplate Posted July 25, 2022 Posted July 25, 2022 My tackle box is always organized before i even leave the the last spot i fished. If it is 10:30 pm i will kneel down and with my headlamp on put all unbroken lures in their spot, broken lures, chewed up snelled jigs, leaders get thrown in the everything bucket and get repaired during the week. Quote
Sphynx Posted July 25, 2022 Posted July 25, 2022 I don't know that I can say I "like" it, but I definitely recognize the value of it, and how much time being organized saves me, and how much less likely I am to forget the gear I need to be successful on the water. The other benefit of being extremely organized does for me is it allows me to track trends in both what I am using most, which baits I am replacing most, and which baits never really get fished...there's also the part where regular inspection and maintenance on rods/reels/line etc will prolong the lifespan of the stuff I paid good hard cash for, and that's probably the most sensible reason as far as my family is concerned. Quote

Any, and I mean ANY excuse to fiddle with my tackle. Boat will be loaded up the night before as well. It’s really enjoyable for me, and makes those 3:30am drives to the lake that much easier. Exactly nothing smoother than rolling out of bed and just getting in your car and going fishing, no hassle no rushing around to get organized. 1 Quote

If I can’t be on the water, I want to be messing with my gear. 2 Quote

txchaser Posted July 26, 2022 Posted July 26, 2022 I think it is my least favorite part of fishing besides not catching fish. And it got to the point where I'd get on the water and often have a much different plan than the original one after I saw what the weather was really like and the water clarity was really like, and where the bait was. The one exception is if I think I'm going to need something specialized or complicated, I know to get out ahead of my "but I really don't feel like fiddling with rigging a carolina rig" urges and do it the night before. Quote
Gorris317 Posted July 26, 2022 Posted July 26, 2022 I usually only organize my tackle at the beginning of the season unless my "confidence" lure changes during the season.  Usually set up my tackle so that the lures I have most confidence with are on top. If I try another bait or they seem to be liking a different bait then it gets reorganized.  But my reels and rods get cleaned almost every trip. Add oil or grease if needed and give a good wipe down to get crud off of them. Quote
