Super User Jigfishn10 Posted July 20, 2022 Super User Posted July 20, 2022 Mom an Dad like to stop over at the beach house for a drink. They have a place a block away. So good, no driving. They’re in their 80’s so I’ll play some 50’s or 60’s music. They really like 50’s best. I like it too. I remember as a kid that it was always on when we went to uncle Mac’s house on Saturday nights. Must have been 8-10 yrs old at the time. 50’s music works?! No? 2 Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted July 20, 2022 Super User Posted July 20, 2022 I listen to 50's music now and then. Some great tunes were made back then. 1 Quote

So much good music came from that era. I guess my favorite is an R&B song by The Flamingo's, "I only have eye's for you". 2 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted July 20, 2022 Super User Posted July 20, 2022 50's era jazz, mainly hard bop style, is my jam. Gil Evans/Miles Davis stuff on Columbia is some of my favorite. Porgy and Bess, Sketches of Spain are good starting point for anyone interested. 4 Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted July 20, 2022 Super User Posted July 20, 2022 Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Jones, Hank and The Hag define 50's music for me. In the "modern era" my #1 is King George. 4 Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted July 20, 2022 Super User Posted July 20, 2022 I listen to a little blues and R&B from the 50s, but not much really grabs me. If I had to pick a single decade to only listen to music from, it would probably be the 70s. If allowed to fine tune it, probably 1967 through 1976. If I never again listened to anything released outside that period, I'd probably be ok. 4 Quote

Super User scaleface Posted July 20, 2022 Super User Posted July 20, 2022 I feel I was born in the wrong era . The 50's seem like the coolest decade . I was born in 57 , so grew up in the 60's and 70's . Never identified with the hippies although I liked how the girls dressed . I have a 50's photo of my mom donned in a poodle skirt , saddle shoes and bobby socks . She was so cool . 3 Quote

Have a vivid memory of mom in the kitchen canning while listening to either Tom Jones or George Jones on a record player. This was in the 60's and has me thinking that those were the only records she owned. Lol 2 Quote

Mike He pretty much invited RnR guitar. Listen to everyone who came after him, you'll hear variants of his licks. Plus he wrote his own songs. Elvis fronted a cover band. 1 Quote

I've never been that impressed with Elvis...I feel like Roy Orbison was a much better singer and if he was a little "prettier" we wouldn't talk about Elvis. 2 Quote
Captain Phil Posted July 23, 2022 Posted July 23, 2022 I love all types of music except hip-hop which I don't consider music. It's more like poetry than music. I was born in 1947. When I was three, my Mom worked in a record store and I went with her and listened to it all. Early 50s music was left over from the 40's Big Band Swing Era. There were some great singers like Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra and the Ink Spots. The first real Rock and Roll singer I remember was Chuck Berry. Most of the early Rockers were black. This was one reason Rock and Roll was initially hated by white parents. This is sad because those singers were ground breaking and absolutely fabulous. Pat Boone was the favorite with parents. In the mid fifties, Elvis became popular. He was white and sang like a black man. All went well until they saw his hips moving around on TV. Funny how things were in those days. My favorite 50s group was the Everly Brothers. Ricky Nelson was very underrated. I still remember first hearing Ray Charles sing "Hit the Road Jack" from a juke box. Buddy Holley was great, but he died too early. The Beatles claimed his songs inspired their early music. Roy Orbison wrote and sang some great songs. He would have been more popular if he had been better looking. Other great singers were Bobby Daren, Bobby Vinton, Steve Lawrence and Neil Sedaka. I am sure I have missed more than I have named including all the groups like the Supremes, Temptations and the Miracles. Everything changed in 1964 with the Beatles. It seemed they had a new song every week better than the song before. I like Hard Rock too. Lead Zeppelin, Ozzie and The Who were some of the best. The 50s and 60s were the best decades for rock and roll period. Who could forget the Doors, Rolling Stones or Jefferson Airplane? These days, I like listening to County Oldies Willies Roadhouse on Sirius XM. It's all good... 2 Quote
Super User T-Billy Posted July 23, 2022 Super User Posted July 23, 2022 Roy's voice was unbelievable. Gene Vincent, Edie Cochran, Johnny Burnette, Little Richard, Jerry Lee... What an era. 1 Quote

Chuck ushered in a new era with his own style gleaned from the R&B guys who came before him. Those you mentioned and most everyone who came later built on the foundation Chuck laid. It's tough to pick a greatest of all time. Chuck probably made the greatest contribution to RnR. Lots of great players. When I think of greatest pickers, Roy Clark always comes to mind. That guy could flat out rip on anything with strings on it. 1 Quote
