I’ve been throwing the WP90 on a 7’1” MHMF Mojo Bass Casting rod with a Shimano Curado K.

In a recent thread I saw someone mention that you want bend in your rod when fighting on top with trebles, yet I’ve also heard moderate/moderate fast is preferable to fast for this reason. Which is better?

I couldn’t seem to find a MMF in any St Croix line, is that my best option if I can find it?

I believe I posted that earlier ?.

But I'm a straight braid user with no stretch and with treble hooks you don't need the backbone of MH.

I won't refute what works for other members but for top water treble hooks, med action is more than enough with a properly set drag.

Can't remember the last fish I've lost on top with a Med moderate fast using straight braid.

To much rod and the fish come in with gaping holes or simply spit the hook.

Is MF better than MHMF?

With straight braid, yes. IMHO

My fishing partner for many years always fishes on the heavy side with treble hooks and his fish comes in ripped up.

Keep in mind that what the label says on the rod may or may not be how it fishes. Some are slightly off, and some are works of fiction.

When you're looking for feedback from the group on a rig-specific question, it's helpful to include the line you're using. This matters in your case.

My personal preference in most rods I own are models that run on the stiffer side. My 7'1" MF rated up to 5/8oz tilts that way. During the prespawn here, while the weeds are low and floating algae hasn't yet become an issue for trebles, I use it with a reel spooled with 10lb-12lb Trilene Big Game for WP 75s, squarebills, and jerkbaits, Big Game's stretch and this particular rod work well together to set and keep trebles pinned while never feeling overloaded by a lure like the WP 75. I adjust drag to hook diameter.

Now that we're overgrown here, I really can't throw those baits anymore, but I'm using the same rod with a reel spooled with straight 30lb braid for small paddle tail swimmers and toads. The hooks I choose for these baits aren't fine wire like trebles. I need a heavier hook to pull fish out of pad fields, and through weeds and slop. The nature of this particular rod combined with braid work well together for setting those heavier hooks at the end of a long cast, then bringing fish in.

As @Deleted account alluded to, rod ratings are all over the place. Company A's MF isn't necessarily the same thing as company B's MF, and on and on. However, you can successfully balance and adapt a setup with your choice of line. With that choice, you can tune around the nature of a particular rod, then successfully fish it with different types of baits.

I fish mine on MH and H Falcons (Hudson special and Lizard dragger 1).  Action MF.  14/17 lb mono or thereabouts.  I'm using a 110 most of the time, but might drop to a 90.  The hooks are sharp and fish generally attack them hard when they hit them so are often hooking themselves.  I treat them like a big crankbait when it comes to the rod.  I also don't prefer true moderate actions for crankbaits.

I personally prefer to fish treble hook baits with the exception of large hard swimbaits and glide baits on a medium rod. I had a tournament partner a few years ago who did everything with a broomstick and like someone else posted he was rough on the fish. Your rod should be fine as long as you don't try to bring the fish in hard and fast. I know mojo bass comes in a 7'1M because my daughter uses one for square bills and topwater.

To me, the 90 is a sort of inbetween sized lure that an be thrown on a M/F or a MH/MH or MH/F. Braid users will prefer a slower taper. It is a treble hook, but a larger treble hook so you can use a slightly heavier rod than you normally would use it for.

Both the 7'1" M/F or the 7' MH/MF Mojo Bass rods are perfectly fine option for the Whopper Plopper 90.

So for the 90 you prefer MF or MHMF?

Look up Kistler. Trey’s KLX line are mod-fast. I have spinning and casting models in different lengths and consider them very ‘universal’.  They’ve got nice bends and good backbone.  They’re made in Texas too.

Best of luck finding your rod.

Me personally I would throw it on a medium rod. The MHMF should work I just prefer a medium to help keep them pinned.

SC Glass MH crank bait should work for you.

Not much you can't do with a MH. If that's all you have you can make it work. Just go a little easier when landing fish on treble hooks.

Isn’t the “moderate” in MHMF better for keeping them pinned/avoiding ripping out trebles than the lower power rating of the Medium?

I fish mine on a M/F with straight 20lb braid.

x2. I was fishing a WP 90 on MHF Kistler Argon on braid with a very small bit of mono leader just to avoid line fouling on front hook and losing way too many fish soon after hooking them. Switched to a Falcon HD medium power/mod fast  action casting rod, problem solved. Also use medium spinner if cover is pretty sparse, works like a charm. (But you’re screwed if they take you into any cover.)

I toss my 90s on my crank-rig. Fury 705CB MH/MF - 12# YZH.

The 60s I throw on my Fury 703C M/F - 8# YZH
