cchapraps Posted July 14, 2022 Posted July 14, 2022 Hey guys, I am looking to get a versatile rod tailored towards smaller hard and soft baits. I would be looking for something that can throw jerkbaits, smaller worms, shaky heads, small lipless and topwaters, etc. kinda like a “jack of all trades” for smaller baits. I am trying to decide between a G Loomis GLX 842c MBR and a Shimano Expride 6’10” medium. I have heard a few things about the reel seat on the GLX being a problem, some people even saying it made them sell the rod. I have fairly large and long hands and will most likely pair the rod up with a 50-100 size reel. Wanted to see if anyone owned either of these rods and what baits they typically use on them. Thanks guys, looking forward to hearing from you! Quote

Super User FishTank Posted July 14, 2022 Super User Posted July 14, 2022 842C would be my choice. Love the MBR rods. 1 1 Quote
newapti5 Posted July 14, 2022 Posted July 14, 2022 The reel seat of GLX is similar to the Fuji's ACS reel seat, which could be a problem for some reels. But it really depends on what reel you plan to pair with the GLX. For a Bantam or the new Metanium, the reel seat won't be a problem; but for Daiwa reels or Abu reels, I haven't found a good match to it. 1 Quote

Super User NHBull Posted July 14, 2022 Super User Posted July 14, 2022 I have both. GLX all day long and twice on Sunday's 1 1 Quote
Super User NorcalBassin Posted July 15, 2022 Super User Posted July 15, 2022 I also have both and really enjoy each of them. The 842 can cover nearly everything smaller/lighter. Mine usually has a 2.8 or 3.3 keitech tied on, but I've used it for so many things it would take too long to list them. The expride does great as my topwater and jerkbait rod, and it would also likely be a good all around choice for anyone on a little tighter budget. 1 1 Quote

Just because of the versatility and warranty of the GLX I think that’s the direction i’ll head. Thanks to everyone who helped me out! Quote

Why is pairing a Daiwa with a GLX a problem? I’m looking now, but not familiar with different reel seats. Quote

As shown in below picture, the Zillion on the left doesn't leave me much room to comfortably place my middle finger under the reel, and the Bantam on the right has plenty. This is a common problem for ACS style reel seats, and a problem for anglers who hold reels this way. 1 Quote

I use a USA Zillion G and an Alphas 800 on them, and it's a perfect match. 1 Quote
DaveT63 Posted February 18, 2023 Posted February 18, 2023 I have an Alphas SV105L on my 842 and it feels great. But then again, my 842 is the OG style with the full cork handle and what I believe is an ECS style reel seat. Quote
